Coronavirus general discussion and chit-chat

‘Wouldn’t’.

Just one small data point. Hubs refused to get vaccinated and caught COVID. He then decided that his body’s naturally strong immune system was now super charged and he didn’t need a vaccination. He caught Delta. He was positive that surviving the original and delta versions meant that his naturally strong immune system was more than supercharged and that he would never need to be vaccinated. I played my “ace in the hole” and he finally got fully vaccinated. He hasn’t had any version of Covid since then.

So, going my my experience only, I’d say that the immunity someone gets from surviving Covid isn’t as good as being vaccinated.

And even if it were, I have yet to see any research that claims that surviving COVID gives the same level of immunity as both surviving COVID and getting the vaccine. If your company has a vaccine mandate, there’s not really a compelling reason to let those who had COVID off the hook.

I needed some imaging done and when I showed up, the lady manning the front door handed me a MRI compliant mask and told me to wear that one instead of my surgical mask during my entire visit.

MRI compliant masks. Who would’s thunk?

I’m guessing it’s because of that little metal wire that many surgical masks have to fit tighter on the nose.

Yeah, I figured it out right away as well. It was just something different in the times of COVID.

Of course, she expected me to change masks while standing in front of her which seemed not as safe as it could be, but that was thoughtlessness on management’s part, not hers. This pandemic stuff isn’t as new as it was, but human error is as old as mankind.

I would just have held my breath while changing masks. I did that while the dermatologist examined the skin under my mask, too. (I left the mask on for most of that exam, but the dermatologist wants to look at ALL of your hide.)

In Tim Rickard’s comic strip Brewster Rocket, Dr. Mel comes up with a way to increased the number of people willing to get the vaccine: Brewster Rockit by Tim Rickard for September 28, 2021 - GoComics

Our housekeeper was supposed to be in California (Bakersfield area) helping her sister recover from breast cancer surgery. She didn’t go because the plastic surgeon is refusing to work in the hospital until the COVID surge slows down. If the plastic surgeon isn’t onboard, the sister will have to have the cancer surgery, fully recover and then get opened up again.

The sister is going on chemo hoping to stave off surgery until she only has to have one.

Just another story of a potentially life saving medical operation stopped by selfish anti-vax assholes.

I don’t care if they get vaxxed anymore. I just want them to stay out of the hospitals. They should just stay home and die there.

In response to no one, I’m just waiting to read about someone saying ‘I ain’t goin’ into no corn time!’

I have a question about rapid tests. Last time I checked, at least a year ago, they had very high rates both of false positives and negatives. Have they improved since then?

Friend got Covid after Christmas, discovered when he got tested before traveling. Got his first vaccination in June. Tested positive in July/August (don’t remember exactly when), discovered when he got tested before traveling.

I think he hasn’t got his second vaccination yet, because he’s in the UK. Hope he’s done with it.

I was told specifically to wait until I was in the waiting area, where I would be alone, to exchange my mask for the MRI compliant one.

I would really like that our company would require a certificate for being in the office. That would mean that being in the office could return to normal as we would no longer need to wear masks when walking around the office and groups could sit together at the cafeteria. Unfortunately, there are way too many people who have the opinion that they don’t need to get vaccinated because they eat well and are healthy.

Any idea if homeboy will get a booster shot? How many full-breed kittens do shirked booster shots cost in late 2021?

I just took 3 steps back and out the door. I trust being outside more than I do being inside. I wasn’t concerned about myself, I’m feeling pretty bulletproof *, as I was about that poor young lady having multiple people unmask in front of her.

He’s all kittened out. George if cute and fun and cuddly and a total pain in the ass! He agreed to all boosters, and his word is good.

*fully vaccinated and also recovered from delta. My immune system will probably kick the boosters butt next month, LOL!

I see most of my doctors in a hospital, and the rest inside a large office building with multiple tenants. “out the door” means I’m in a busy hallway, and close to other people. I suppose if “outside” had been an option I might have taken it.

Of course, I really had to be unmasked for the dermatologist (who needed to look at the skin on my face) and for the ENT woman who was threading a scope up my nostril to peer into my sinuses. There’s really no way around that. “Now, this might make you sneeze” is not the most comforting thing to hear these days, but it needed to be done.

I thought I saw a discussion in here somewhere about the idea of prioritizing monoclonal antibody treatment for the unvaccinated, but I can’t find it. Anyway, I thought this was interesting…

Apparently the Biden administration is imposing limits on ordering Regeneron so the supply is spread more evenly throughout the country instead of allowing seven states (Alabama, Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, and Louisiana) to hog up 70% of the supply. It seems states with lower vaccination rates have been taking more than their fair share.

Not sure if political discussion is restricted in all the threads in this forum? I guess I’m just surprised that I don’t seem to have heard much about the Biden administration trying to spread out the supply of Regeneron more evenly and not keep giving most of it to red states. I would expect Greg Abbott or Rick Desantis to squawk more about this. There is some complaining in the article, but I haven’t heard the usual claims of “liberals are trying to kill us” or something like that.

Here’s a quick reflection from the UK on how to achieve inefficient vaccination (Mrs T and I just did).

This could be a real rough 'flu season. At the moment there is a drive to vaccinate for 'flu in parallel with plans for booster shots for COVID. I mean, really in parallel - one visit, one shot in each arm. OK, so it’s undeniably efficient. But aside from the fact that I have never had a vaccination - or any sort of shot, I think - in my dominant right arm, and don’t much want one, what happens if you get two sore arms?

Trep jr (frontline healthcare, so priority for vaccinations) reports that you get a really shit night’s sleep for a couple of days.

Our regular local pharmacy has just started promoting the fact that they’re doing flu shots for over-50’s. Hell, (a) why wait for a 'flu shot? and (b) it’ll be weeks-to-months before we get called up for COVID boosters, and we can sneak the 'flu shot in early (we just did) and, hopefully, sleep better after the boosters.

j

A. No need to wait.
B. You can get a shot in your upper leg if you don’t want to use one or both arms.

I’m not sure that’s true in the UK (and I seem to remember Trep jr saying it wasn’t an option).

j

Weird. I suppose you could ask where they give injections for people with lymphedema in their arms.
