Has anyone changed their approach since this thread started 4 days ago? I’ve gone from more handwashing to pretty much committing to self quarantine for the next few weeks. The flatten the curve stuff convinced me. They are closing the schools, and I think that’s wise. I may see my parents briefly today, but I won’t get close.
I’m treating this like I have it and I don’t want to kill anyone, not like I am panicking I will get sick.
I find the arguments for “flattening the curve” convincing as well, and I expect the museum where I work will shut down completely this coming week. Work from home or at the museum would likely be a wash, as there would be at most one other person on the premises when I’m there, and always the same person.
The rest of my life pretty much naturally falls in with social distancing practices to start with, and any public places that might tempt me to go out and potentially infect people look to be systematically closed down very soon anyway.
Go easy on that poor strawman. He didn’t start the epidemic.
The CDC has published a list of things you could do, including social isolation. Sounds like you’re already doing that, you’ve just chosen to do it very indignantly. Fine with me, just continue doing it.
I tried holding my breath when I got on the elevator this morning. I couldn’t hold it the whole way up to my floor, but maybe by the end of the week my lungs will have mastered this trick.
Let’s see… I quit riding public transit about a week and a half ago, because in the best of times, there always seems to be a sizeable population of really unhealthy looking people and/or actual sick people riding it, and I’m not excited about the idea of being cooped up in a tube with a bunch of random people for 30 minutes at a stretch.
Otherwise… my family is deliberately limiting all non-essential ventures from the home- I have to go to work, but the wife and kids are staying home (it’s spring break anyway), and I’m really hoping they let us work from home in the very near future.
We had started our preparations in case of a lockdown/self-quarantine several weeks ago- we tend to buy in bulk anyway, so we just ramped that up and got ahead of our normal cycle, as well as loaded up on ingredients for large meals. We should be fine for 3 weeks or so no problem, and probably another week or two past that if we had to stay home without going to the store.
I suspect in the absence of any of us actually catching the virus, it’ll hit our kids the hardest; they’re going to get stir-crazy fast being cooped up in our house and backyard for weeks.
I’m working from home, washing my hands like crazy and bleaching things occasionally when I think about it.
What scares the shit out of me is that my mom is scheduled to move from Indiana to Missouri next Tuesday. I got her to call the moving company to see if they could do it this week and they can’t. She doesn’t actually own the house she’s living in now - the new owner just allowed her to stay in it 30 days after the closing so she could get packed up, but he’s scheduled to take possession next week. So if worse comes to worse, I guess she’ll just move in with me temporarily and put her furniture in storage.
What kills me is that there are no cases in her medium-sized town so she’s acting like the thing doesn’t exist. I tried to get her to make a contingency plan in case they can’t move her and she got mad at me for stressing her out.
The kids are home with me and they’re allowed to play outside, but have been told that they can’t play with friends indoors and that they need to keep some distance between themselves and any friends they happen to see outside.
I can’t speak to the server / sweating customer, but a lot of delivery services are sending out notices that they can do a contactless delivery. Maybe a Fedex package that is “signature required” wouldn’t work, and if you’re in an area where packages can’t be left safely it’s a problem, but for most people there are ways around that.
And going down that track: I wonder if “porch pirates” are going to see a dropoff in their profits since more people are now at home to receive their packages?
The last two times I went into the city to the client site, I drove vs taking Metro - didn’t want to be on a train with hundreds of people, even though it cost me a LOT more driving (with parking etc). Now they’re shut down and I’m fulltime WFH anyway so it’s no longer an issue.
I’m washing a lot more carefully - quit wearing my rings because they got in the way. And we’re basically not leaving the house - though I may hit an ATM later to get some cash for emergencies, but I think I’ll wear gloves when I do it.
Except for two trips to buy food, I haven’t gone to any public place in a week. But I did witness two friends suddenly come to their senses. On Saturday, two of them posted pictures on Facebook from their spring break vacation destinations. They were so excited. Then we got updates today. One of them was in Mobile with her husband and grandson. They did manage to do a couple of touristy things yesterday but now they are going to the beach for the rest of the trip because “that’s safer”. Well, maybe, but at least they are avoiding crowds now.
The other one, along with her fiance (a doctor!) and his two kids were in Winter Park Colorado. They were looking forward to skiing Sunday. Not surprisingly today they are shocked SHOCKED that everything has closed and they have had to rent a car to drive home to avoid airports. Now they are suddenly warning everyone to be prepared for big changes. I didn’t say it but I thought they might have considered that before they left.
I am only going out to get some food and personal care products. Not going to bar, cinema, gym or restaurant etc.
I have always been careful about personal hygiene so no change about it.
I am retired and my husband works from home, and we usually just hang out at home with our dog anyway. We already did virtually all of our shopping online anyway, so no change there. I have stocked up a bit, but nothing extreme. We are not planning to go out any time soon. I had planned to go visit family the first week in April but I cancelled that flight last week.
