If there was some way spacesuits were designed to allow venting of flatulence directly into the vacuum of space without harming the astronaut could some well aimed farts propel him back to safety should said astronaut accidentally untether himself?

If the suit is designed to vent, the astronaut wouldn’t have to fart. The suit’s air would serve as reaction mass.

I suspect both the mass and velocity of gas the average person could rip out would be insufficient to give our putative astronaut the delta-V needed to move very far at any useful velocity.

You’ve never eaten at a Mexican buffet, have you? That alone could give me the energy for a one-man trip to Mars.

Ah, a suitable challenge. Some searching on the interwebs leads us to [this page](http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:HjP2K0ny7MkJ:mistupid.com/facts/page070.htm+speed+of+a+fart&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=uk) on farts, the veracity of which I cannot vouch for, but which seems reasonable.

If we accept that people can fart at 10 ft /s (=3m/s, give or take), and that the average fart weighs [about 0.0464 gm](http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-194893.html) (which is 46.4 \* 10^-6 kg), the average momentum transfer from a single fart is about 1.39 \* 10 ^-4 kg m/s. For an average 60kg astronaut, his (or her, of course) velocity would be a rather pitiful 2.32 \* 10^-6 m/s. 2.32 micrometers per second isn’t going to get you anywhere much.

So, in short, no, he could not fart his way back in the manner described, unless he was prepared to wait a long, long time.

Did I mention that I love the internet?

That’s all fine and dandy, **Dervorin** , but if he farted twice, he would be going _twice_ that fast.

</div>

An astronaut would be smart enough to squeeze their butt cheeks to maximize thrust and would probably figure out how to do thrust vectoring as well. He may get going so fast, he’d need to turn around and fart to slow down.

I think given the terms described in the OP, the answer must be YES! The OP did not state a distance, but given that 6" may as well be 6 miles when you’re alone and separated from your spaceship, farting might just be a lifesaver.

By the way, **Dervorin** , nice calculations every bit worthy of The Dope!

That or he could [Dutch Boy](http://jasonkolb.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/little_dutch_boy.jpg) the hole with one of his fingers, thus creating an adjustable choke with a vector component. Whichever he chooses I hope he remembers that practice makes perfect.

What about a focused bout of sneezing then? 100mph of thrust would surely not go amiss in such a dire situation?

You’d probably get the greatest amount of reaction mass with spitting. You could probably get a good 100 grams by hurking a huge glob of snot.

Liquid propulsion systems would have a higher specific impulse. Just open that little flap in front of the pressurized union suit.
