I was reading a recent BBC Future article (Could you survive on just one food?) and was thinking that Cecil had addressed this at some point. Sure enough, the author refers to [the 2008 column](http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2828/could-i-survive-on-nothing-but-potatoes-and-milk) (about halfway down), with a shoutout to “his assistant” ( **Una** ) to boot. A Scottish dietician interviewd for the article responded to the column’s findings with:
Oh, that’s our diet – that’s the Scottish diet from a hundred years ago. That fits right in. Potatoes, milk, and oatmeal, with some kale in there, too.
Well done.
