I am really amazed that, in this day and age, the world in general, and **particularly** the people who frequent the sight dedicated to _stamping out ignorance_, has not gotten over making fun of hirsute people. (Or making fun of how people look in general, but that’s for another thread.)

Um, why should we? Because **you** don’t like looking at it? I can only think of two words to address that fact: **Tough shit**.

Sure, there are hair removal systems out there. Ever tried removing copious amounts of coarse, thick body hair? I have.

Laser removal and electrolysis are right out–considering the amount of hair in question, it would be prohibitively in question.

Nair? Nope–doesn’t work on hair that thick and coarse. And it can irritate the skin seriously.

Shaving? Maybe with a good set of clippers. Even then, it takes a long time, and grows back fast. And itches like hell when it does. Using a standard razor and foam is out of the fucking question. Ever gotten razor burn on your chest, or your legs, or around your pubes? Now imagine it across your entire chest.

Waxing? Riiiiight.

Yep, I’ve tried lots of them. I’ve got thick hair from my shoulders to my ankles, and for my entire life I’ve been made to feel bad enough about it to subject myself to painful attempts at removal.

Then I realized, it isn’t my problem – it’s YOUR problem (a general “you”), because you can’t stand looking at someone who doesn’t fit your bullshit image of what’s attractive or normal.

You think I like being stared at by shallow-minded assholes when I go to the beach or the pool? No. I hate it. I spent a week in Maui in January for a sales meeting, and had to worry every time I went to the pool or went snorkeling that I was going to get stared at by some moron (including the possibility of that moron being a co-worker).

You think I like getting my hair cut, and having the stylist shave the back of my neck, and pulling down my collar a bit, and sitting there wondering if she’s thinking, “Cripes, where does it stop?” Nope. It’s embarrassing. Makes me feel like a dork.

You think I like the jokes in the locker room, or any of the other baggage that goes with it? I sure don’t. But you know what? If you don’t like people with excessive body hair, **too goddamned bad**. It’s your problem, and it means you’re a shallow, pathetic loser.

Before we get completely out of control: my impression is that the OP was surprised at what he found. I don’t see any judgment in his post at all, just something he never saw before.

I sympathise with your sentiments, Phil, and you’re completely right. But I do think you’re preaching to the choir a bit here. Nobody seems to be saying hairy people are in any way less than others. Zoggie seems to wonder why they don’t do anything about it, which could be seen as a somewhat limited POV. But hardly a slam.

If it helps, I have my fair share of body hair as well. I’ve gotten remarks about it from time to time, but they never really bothered me that much. As you say Phil: it’s their problem.

I saw [this, uh, thing](http://uglypeople.com/uglygender/ugly-images/up-gender-00051.jpg) about a month ago. :eek:x100 Haven’t slept soundly since.

PS: Is the OP pic an example of lycanthropy?

Also, is [this](http://uglypeople.com/uglygender/ugly-images/up-gender-00039.jpg) another pic of our old Peter Pan friend?

Coldy, is that post of yours being written as a moderator or as a poster? Your answer is going to affect if and how I reply further.

For the moment, suffice to say that:

–The OP didn’t link to “[thingsIneversawbefore.com](http://thingsIneversawbefore.com),” it linked to “[uglypeople.com](http://uglypeople.com).”
–The OP also questioned whether such a person could actually exist. The value judgement here is obvious, AFAIC.
–Further posts referred to excessively hairy people as “very strange looking,” contained notable nicknames (“FurMonster”) for them, took gratuitous potshots ("When do they know to stop shaving?), asked if the OP was an example of lycanthropy(!), etc.

This is supposed to be a community of smarter than average people. I thought making fun of people for the way they look was, well, stupid.

For what it’s worth…

I think body hair is sexy. The picture referenced in the OP is going a bit too far, but hey, Tom Selleck’s I find quite handsome.

And I’m not even gay. (Bi-curious if you got me stoned and suggested a BGB threeway, maybe, but not generally attracted to other men.)

As for women, I have absolutely no problem with body hair, anywhere, as long as it’s not a full-out beard and moustache… In fact, I downright adore fuzzy pits.

There was a picture of Julia Roberts displaying unshaven axillaries in People a couple of years ago. I thought it was as sexy as if she had been topless. But she caught all kinds of flack over it. I thought that sucked - I was hoping it would catch on.

And I’ll stop here, straddling the TMI line…

Hey, now…I _did_ say this:

> [@](#):

> Mongrel\_8’s family _(you know what I mean)_

Indicating (of course) the family to which you were referring, not your own. I figured people would get it. But I also realised how it sounded when I wrote it. Jus’ bein’ silly, I’m a guessin’.

I usually heard Jojo billed as the Dog-faced Boy, too. But the first site I found billed him as the Wolf Man. You got to see him, **Eve**? That would have been cool. I just found out that [Johnny Eck](http://www.bullseyedesigns.com/sideshow/people/limbless/johnny_eck.htm) only died about five years ago. Wish I could have met him.

A bit of both, to be honest. Since the OP nor you really did anything wrong, I sort of relied on my natural charisma combined with my moderator tag to diffuse things a little. 😉
Too little to break out the “Moderator Notes” line, I thought.

> –The OP didn’t link to “[thingsIneversawbefore.com](http://thingsIneversawbefore.com),” it linked to “[uglypeople.com](http://uglypeople.com).”\*\*

Sure. But that’s how it goes, doesn’t it? People receive a link in their e-mail, or find it somewhere on the net. Curiosity takes over and they start looking around. I know I do. As such, I can imagine the OP coming across said picture without too much intended harm. The questions could very well be out of curiosity, despite the questionable nature of the linked website.

> [@](#):
>
> **–The OP also questioned whether such a person could actually exist. The value judgement here is obvious, AFAIC.**

I disagree there. All I see is someone who seems genuinely surprised at what he saw.

> [@](#):
>
> **–Further posts referred to excessively hairy people as “very strange looking,” contained notable nicknames (“FurMonster”) for them, took gratuitous potshots ("When do they know to stop shaving?), asked if the OP was an example of lycanthropy(!), etc.**

Again, my _interpretation_ is surely different. Obviously, you’re a bit more sensitive on the subject than I am. But that is not something that automatically prompts me to take actions towards the OP: a message is delivery and reception.
I don’t see “FurMonster” or any other nickname on this page on a quick re-read. Nor did I see “very strange looking”, although some posts contain words to that effect. What can you do? People see something that deviates from the norm - and they think it’s strange. The way of the world. The question on when to stop shaving could be any combination of humour, mockery, and curiosity. Impossible to tell.
I guess I’m not PC enough to take away the benefit of the doubt in such cases.

1. I did not create or name [uglypeople.com](http://uglypeople.com)

2. It is my nature to be curious, what other reason would I have for posting on this message board?

3. A friend and I were perusing [uglypeople.com](http://uglypeople.com) when we came across this fellow, I have seen many hairy people in real life but never with such abundant growth. I thought it might be a touched up photo, my friend disagreed, I left it up to the SDMB to decide.

I am sincerely sorry if I my OP was politically incorrect. Curiosity killed the cat (another beautiful and furry mammal)

For all you people above, Keith Young was top news a while back. I don’t care for the way the news reporters handled this, but the story is told here. Finding allacrety at someone’s personal geneticly controled looks is
sad. Being curious and inquiring is different. Anybody that posted here know’s what their own intent was.

Yup. I’m locking this thread. While the OP states he had no intent of making fun of people for whatever physical characteristics they may have, we seem quickly headed down that path. Frankly, I find _that_ repulsive.
