Googling “police code 88” doesn’t confirm this. Do you have a cite?

(I’m dubious, mostly because I can’t see the need for a special code for this kind of eventuality – would the police handle it differently than, say, a disturbance involving anarchists?)

If HH meant anything dubious in the German psyche, they would not put HH on the number plates of every car in one of Germay’s largest cities.

I don’t think anyone is saying that 88 is a big thing to Germans, it’s much more of a thing for English-speaking Neo-Nazis in the US, UK, and so on.

I have seen skinheads with the HH tattoos and they’re always in conjunction with the 88 tattoos, but these guys always seem to have crazy clown tattoos, also. What do the clown tattoos represent?

In Asian cultures 8 or 88 is considered lucky - so just because there is a screen name 88 don’t jump to any conclusions

True, though that brings up its own unsavory associations. It’s common knowledge in Japan, for example, that an expensive car with darkened windows and 88’s in the license most likely belongs to someone high up with the yakuza.

German Neo-Nazis do seem to have adopted some trappings of the US Neo-Nazi/White Power scene though; they are not immune from the general cultural diffusion of US culture.

German car number plates have prefixes to designate the city. H is used for Hannover, and the large city of Hamburg, also starting with H, is designated as HH, for Hamburg’s official name, Verfassung der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg.

That 88 thing is a US NeoNazi thing.
It kinda like the meaning of “ersatz” in English vs the German original meaning.

In Germany the HH or 88 had nothing to do with Nazi, until the US started to put it in movies and TV shows representing Neo-Nazis.

…and yes, extremely few people driving a car in Hamburg with HH are Nazis, especially since you’re number plate must start with HH.
