Could we please have a separate video games forum?

Heartily endorsed.

And if a mod shortage was a big stumbling block, I’d accept a nomination (for video games).

This is how see it too. TGR mods are already modding all those threads. I think they can handle those same threads split up between a sub-forum or two.
As for having a seperate video game forum I have no opinion. I’m happy with how it is now and I’ll be just as happy if a sub-forum is added.

Just do sub forums as was already suggested.

If there’s the same number of posts, it doesn’t really matter how TGR is chopped up, does it? The same mods can oversee it who now oversee just TGR, no extra workload other than moving threads that are posted in the wrong subforum.

I know I’m pretty new here so salt the following as needed, but the current forum, The Game Room just feels muddled and cluttered. Splitting the video-game threads into a separate forum would surely reduce that clutter. Or, as has been mentioned previously, doing the same with sports related threads. Nothing new to add, really, only trying to give the notion a thumbs-up.

I can certainly live with the current state of affairs, but like this proposal a lot. I have very little interest in sports and zero interest in thread games, but I do like to read about video games and roleplaying games (NERD!) The current games forum is kind of a mess.

Thanks, but you don’t have to apologize! There’s nothing wrong with those threads, they could just be better organized

You’d see everything that’s not sub-categorized. So you wouldn’t see sports, thread games, or video games (because they have their own subforms), but you’d see posts about board games, party games, kid games, wargames, whatever. They’re basically like folders. So you’d have to click one extra time to see thread games or video games, but then the rest of TGR would have more space.

Or under the alternate proposal, thread games would have their own subforum and all other games would share the main TGR. I’m fine with that too, seeing that it’s still a step towards better organization.

You’re acting as if the creation of subforums = creation of new threads. If the moderators of IMHO are already doing a good job moderating that forum, by way of example, they’re not having to moderate a higher number of threads if that forum is broken into three subforums.

Subforums are just a way of organizing posts within an existing forum.

Just a heads-up: I don’t particularly care whether any forum on this board is given subforums.

Yeah the thread games really should have their own sub-forum within The Game Room. I think video games and sports and table top and card games are all similar enough to be in one forum, but there are way too many thread games these days and it clutters up that room really badly. I get why we don’t want to split up the forum into too many subforums, because then it becomes a big debate of what’s a sport and what’s not, or what’s the real difference between a video game and a card game, or pen and paper rpg, etc etc. But at least get the thread games out of the mix.

I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

My interest in sport threads ranges from zero to near-zero, but it’s easy to scroll past them. I guess I’d like The Game Room a bit more if it weren’t cluttered up with sports stuff. Creating a new forum/subforum for them seems like a lot of work, though.

I think I agree with splitting thread games, but allowing sports, (non-thread game) tabletop games, card games, and video games to coexist.

The Game Room is a big mess of unrelated crap. A separate sports forum would be a great improvement.

I was considering posting something similar myself, because personally I prefer the days when thread games were effectively disallowed as “post-padding”. However, I recognise that other people enjoy them (and I have participated in them myself on occasion) so I’m not going to start a campaign to ban them, it’s easy to scroll past what you don’t want to read. Any such campaign would likely get short shrift from the administrators anyway, as I presume the more posts/threads there are, the more attractive this place is to advertisers.

In terms of this topic, I would be quite happy to see sub-forums created as has been suggested, but I also think there may not be enough traffic in The Game Room to justify it. I check the forum on average once a day and never come close to the bottom of the page when looking for new posts. On the other hand, I can’t see a reason not to make the change.

There isn’t enough content to justify breaking it up into sub-forums. Right now, the last thread on the first page of the Game Room has a last posting date of 21 days ago, so it’s not like anything is getting muscled off the first page.

As a forum it’s a little schizophrenic, sure, but that’s a small price to pay compared to how it was before the forum was created.

At the least, games should be moved back to Cafe Society. The sub-head for which states:

Video games are all those, far more consistently than they are just games.

I think that’s true. Video games have more in common with movies than sports (unless it’s a sports game! :))

As a frequent game room poster, anything that spins off thread games would be welcomed.

YOu make an interesting case, but do you really want the mods to have to deal with the twice-weekly ATMB thread asking why games aren’t in the Game Room?

While I like this idea, I’m not sure there’s enough traffic to merit it. I read every video-game and non-sports, non-forum-game post I can find there, pretty much, and it feels like there are only like 4-5 threads of that at any given time. That seems like low volume for an entire forum.

While I approve of the logic, it just doesn’t feel like any of the categories generate enough activity (except maybe “forum games”) to merit their own forum.

I agree giving Dope games their own forum would do the most to clear the clutter.
