If you want to be respectful, please feel free to say a curt, quiet good morning, but if you do it all perky-like, or try to turn it into the opening of a conversation… well, I, for one, find that irritating, _especially_ if you already know I’m not a morning person. But I won’t glare or snap at you, I promise. I may avoid you, however. You should hang out with those other morning people. 😛

Thanks for your answer–it was short, sweet, nice, and all I needed to hear. 🙂

Um, actually, I do have this (admittedly irrational) anger towards people who talk to me in the mornings (again, not at work, for the most part, and really not people who respect my morning habits - usually those who are either clueless, who I quickly forgive, or those who enjoy taunting me, who I don’t). So it’s not really a blank stare because I’m still asleep, it’s a genuine feeling of anger.

But I only speak for me. 😉

Hey, if you were my roomate I would fucking wake you up at 6:00 am every day and beat the crap out of you until you fell into line you lazy piece of shit.

Why? Please explain to me why others who sleep longer and/or different hours than you bothers you so much. Further explain why you said earlier you didn’t care, but you’ll still wake someone up out of spite.

Well as for me, I do have my own room, I don’t have an attitude, and I don’t ask anyone to tiptoe - please go back and read the post from **jkusters** about vacuuming the house while I’m asleep.

Oh, and while you’re at it, go fuck yourself, you reactionary idiot.

You’re right, but we are just asking for a little slack.

What some of us are saying is that coffee (or in my case, tea) is the “kick-start” our brains need. (Well, not so much in my case, but it does help.) Again, just asking for a little slack in the mornings.

Co-workers or strangers? Yes. Friends and housemates who I’ve already asked not to? No - in this case, it’s them that are being rude, not I.

Funny thing is, when I go on my annual camping trip, my campmates evidently have a lot of respect for me. When I wake up and stumble out of my tent towards the bathhouse, I can hear them shuffling around in the kitchen tent - “He’s up! Quick! Boil the water! BOIL THE WATER, FOR GOD’S SAKE!” By the time I get back, my tea is actually sitting there waiting for me. I have never asked them to do this, and they seem to love doing it for me. The system works. 😃

I believe you’re the one not getting it. Needing more sleep isn’t “deciding to be antisocial pricks.” A body taking longer to wake up than others is not “deciding to be antisocial pricks.” Asking people to respect our differences and not _purposely mock us_ is not “deciding to be antisocial pricks.” And, again, read the fucking thread - my housemates _vacuum the house_ while I’m asleep and I _do not complain._ More, I am _perfectly polite at work_ in the mornings. How does sleeping longer and/or different hours than you “self-absorbed?” You seem to be the expert on the subject - you tell us.

No, that’ll wake me up. However, I have slept through my alarms in the past (the one complaint previous housemates and parents have had is that my alarm is too loud, but it’s the only thing that’ll rouse me from a really deep sleep if I’m really tired). Most mornings when I hit the alarm for the _last_ time I have _no recollection_ of having hit it the previous six times. I’ve never had the experience of forgetting a phone call, though, if someone calls while I’m asleep and wakes me up.

**Rick** , I have a question for you - if you know someone is like us, not a morning person, do you still insist on saying good morning to them, even if you know they’re either not yet fully awake and functioning and/or it annoys them?

How about this for some variety:

I like to go to bed early and get up early. I would often rather be in bed, sleeping, than watching a boring movie or late night TV, sitting around drinking with my roommates (with whom I have sat around drinking hundreds of times before), or whatever things people who stay up late like to do. I in no way hold that against them: watch Leno all you want, it’s nothing personal but I’d rather sleep.

And I get grief for that !! Constantly teased about my sleeping habits.

**Esprix** , you mentioned your friends cheerfully and unapologetically pushing your red flashing buttons. Highly unforgivable, along the lines of my friends who torment me about going to bed just because they feel like staying awake.

So as a morning person (by preference) I need to contribute this to the discussion:

One morning, NightGuy runs into MorningGirl in the kitchen. (We are assuming that neither one is the kind of person to purposely annoy the other.)

**Esprix** , you are asking for a little common courtesy: would MorningGirl please not pester NightGuy until he is good and ready. He cannot stand having to make polite conversation when his brain is still involved in that dream about winning the Grammy.

But if I could speak for MorningGirl for a moment: she would like a little common courtesy (a nod, maybe, if a ‘Good Morning!’ is too much to ask.) She cannot stand being forced to sit in silence with a favoured friend/coworker/roommate etc. when she is full of energy.

I understand that it’s inexplicable to you that people can be full of energy in the morning. Please do not hold that against them. Can’t we morning people try to forgive your surliness, and you night people try to forgive our chirpiness? A little give and take is in order. I don’t think anyone is out to intentionally annoy people at this time of day.

Interesting. I don’t know about your place, but in mine the fire alarm is positioned in the living room. (The building-wide klaxon, that is.) It always struck me as being a stupid place to put it, because it’s almost as far from the bedrooms as it can possibly be, and it’s when everyone’s ASLEEP that hearing the alarm is most important. I would always hear it - I need silence when I sleep - but if you were sleeping in my guest room you might not hear it if you’re a sound sleeper, so I was wondering what your experience with fire alarms is. Maybe there’s something about their tone that pierces anyone’s sleep.

I have honestly never met anyone who would be so rude as to not say “good morning” to people in the office, so I really don’t know. If anyone around here has the ability to get to work and still be non-functioning, they hide it well. Of course, I’m one of those people. I’m not a morning person at all.

If someone was always grumpy and half-asleep in the morning I guess I’d avoid them, but they had better not rip my balls off if I slip and make the cardinal error of greeting them. Since at my business you have to deal with other people once you get in - both internal people and external parties - you couldn’t work here if you weren’t able to get along with people starting at 8:30-9:00 anyway.

Hmmmmmm. Well, I THOUGHT I was being clear to the two who didn’t seem to be “getting it”.

But, you’re right. I feel the same way. I just don’t express it. I am quiet instead, unless pushed and harrassed. I bet most other night owls feel the same.

The points I was trying to make were that night owls each deal with their morning difficulties differently and IF you are a morning person, and IF, like the wrong girl asked, you are trying to figure out the best solution on how to deal with night owls, it’s to just not say anything to the night owl.

If morning people feel “awkward” with the silence that night owls maintain until they wake up, then they are making themselves feel that way for NO good reason. The night owls aren’t quiet because they are mad at morning people (unless you follow us around and try to force us to converse too early, lol), or thinking bad thoughts about morning people. This sounds like a different issue actually, people who are unusually discomfitted by silences. (lol)

Somehow that got translated as meaning that morning people aren’t allowed to talk, or that they should be forced to enact special treatment for the night owls.

None of the night owls in this thread said that, in fact, all they EVER said was to “leave them alone” and they’d be fine.

My irritation was with those that refuse to believe that our body rhthyms ARE different, and that we DO actually wake up and physically and mentally feel much differently in the morning, than do “larks”.

The one thing I have to point out is that, for me, replying with silence or just a nod or a grunt is my way of cutting you some slack - because trust me, if I opened my mouth and said what I want to say, you’d never speak to me again! If you can grasp that, then you’ve got it.

Could be. Also, like mentioned above, if something is out of place from the norm or the expected - someone walks in while I’m asleep, an unknown noise, etc. - that probably drills through my subconscious and wakes me, too. Normal stuff doesn’t, though. In fact, in the summertime I have a fan running and in the wintertime I have a noise machine - I LOVE having a little white noise at night. (And the colder the better - I can sleep forever bundled up in the blankets.)

So why your loud protestations? Certainly there are some people like us that work with you - but, like us, we’re not rude to you at work.

So, again, why so vehement against us? Obviously we are all capable of being adults and dealing with people when necessary.

I suppose my next question is, outside of coworkers, do you have _friends or relations_ that are like us in the morning, and do you intentionally disregard their wishes of a quiet, peaceful, non-communicative morning because you think it’s polite to say good morning?

Actually Cowgirl, funny you should bring this up. I CAN understand how a person could be full of energy when they wake up.

I’ve been lucky enough to have several jobs (one lasting 5 years) that were night shift jobs. My first one (at the Airport, that in itself a cool fun job with lots of “psyche” income), was a shift that ran from midnight to 8am. Like most of the “coffin crew” I went to bed right after my shift ended, at about 830 or 9am.

For those five years (and for the times when I worked night shifts since then), I knew what it must feel like to actually feel alive and awake like most people (for YES, we night owls realize we’re in the minority).

Of course, being on night shift and sleeping days brings up a whole 'NOTHER set of people harrassing one for their sleep patterns.

Somehow, morning people in this thread got the highly mistaken idea that we were saying that we should be allowed to just go around grouching at and biting off the heads of any innocent morning people who got in our way. That we should be “knighted” with special disability priviledges.

All we did was try to describe the agonies we experience as minority sleepers in a day time world and how we try to deal with it.

Can’t we all just get along? giggle

Alright, where are they? Everytime I hit the “b” “i” etc, I get some stupid “command line” type arrangement (ala the old AutoCad 14 or something) and then pay hell to my ONE (sorry) darn word I want emphasized in the right place in my paragraph.

Is there another way other than the ones at the top?

I belong to 4 other online communities, and have frankly never seen such a problematic or annoying arrangement for simply changing fonts etc.

Well, I’m over 40 and I still have the same problem, so I don’t think it’s a “young” thing.

I think it’s time for some payback! Let’s all run into our roommates’ and siblings’/parents’ bedrooms at 4:00 AM and shout “HEY LAZY ASS! GET UP! ARE YOU GOING TO SLEEP ALL NIGHT LONG???”

Seriously though. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were two “worlds?” One for the night owls and one for the morning people? I feel a novel coming on. Hmmm… it’s only 12:15 AM, time to start writing. DAM though! If I only didn’t have to wake up at 8:00 for work! Blast this daylight society!!! When oh when are we going to get past this damnable idea of the solar clock!?! We have artificial light everybody! We’ve had it (fire) for thousands of years!!! We don’t need the sun anymore!

Ah, I wondered what that noise was… I was letting my imagination run away with me, so I’m glad you clarified. 😉
