Back when you were a beardless youth this was true. The starting date keeps getting pushed back every year it seems. That’s why back-to-school sales begin in July. Both colleges and local school districts do this. College football, the ultimate fall outdoor sport, starts this weekend. Some one will die of heat stroke one day in a nationally televised game. Already happening at lower levels.
It truly surprised me when school starting opening in August. My only theory is that the school districts are more modern and have all the schools fitted out with AC from the beginning to make it tolerable. Here in the frozen tundra of Upstate New York finals during the last week in June were unbearable in my old and never upgraded high school.
Yes, even here in the rural cornfields of Indiana they’ve been starting in August. We were told it was because of having to add computers to the curriculum, and the students needed to learn how to use them in addition to all the other stuff. But there are places school still starts in September.
In many Christian denominations, the first Sunday in Advent starts the church year.
As for K-12 here, 1-12 started August 11 and K August 18. When I was a kid I think it was in September, but that’s a different school district in a different state and looks like it’s August 11 too. The official last day of school is only 1 day apart, but here we have extra contingency days if too many are cancelled for snow, that wasn’t a concern as a kid.
I’ve got a similar chart on my computer at work, using those dates. (From an English law dictionary, not parish clerks.).
But the calendar year was not always included in the citation to the statute. Some statutes had the calendar year in the title, but others didn’t, so you had to go by the regnal year alone.
I don’t think that’s the case - years and years ago, I recall being told that the reason some places went back in August was so they could end in May, because June was too hot without air conditioning. But is there anyplace where June is hotter than August? The school year is still Sept to June in the NYC area - I kind of wonder if schools start in mid-August in other places because of football.
I was a (non-voting) member of a school board when it moved to start before Labour Day (Canadian for Labor Day). The reason was that parents wanted a ski week in February and the last day was set by law as June 23 (day before the Quebec national holiday of St. Jean-Baptiste) and starting a week earlier was the easiest way to accommodate this, while leaving a two week Christmas break.
