I just remembered a story from when my friend was a kid. It was the first super nice day of the year and her older teenager brother ditched school to go to the river with his friends. The front page of the small town paper the next day had a picture of everyone at the river including her brother. He was so busted that their strict parents couldn’t even be mad. There was also the guy who called in sick on the first day that cannabis was legal so he called in sick to get in line early and be the first one to buy legal weed. There was a picture of him on the news wearing a bright tie dye with a giant smile and his new purchase. ---

One especially warm day during lunch I popped down to the beach for a short walk. The local TV news crew needed some “filler material” and asked what I was up to and I flippantly said I was playing hookie from work. There I was, on TV six o’clock news, to the amusement of my boss. ---

There was a small parking lot, which was frequently at capacity. There was a two-story building on the other side of the parking lot. When the place on the first floor moved out we could then park in front of the building as there was no longer a business that they were reserved for. Apparently the apartments on the second floor were being used as a brothel. I found that out because I picked up the local newspaper & on a front-page, above-the-fold article was an story about how the cops busted it…complete with a large photo of the building…with my car parked right in front of it. 😳 Luckily, it was taken from the front in a rear-only license plate state so while I _knew_ it was my car, it couldn’t officially be identified as such for all of my neighbors. If only I had known about it _before_ it was busted. _::sigh::_ ---

Some places will give you 20 days of PTO (paid time off) to use how you see fit, it’s a combo of vacation & sick days. If you take your 20th day in late Nov / early Dec & then get sick for the first time all year at the end of Dec, you’re taking the day(s) w/o pay. Other employers will give you 15 days of vacation to use as you see fit & also allocate you five (or 10) days of sick time; which is only supposed to be used if you (or possibly a kid) is sick. If I wake up _‘sick’_ (::cough, cough:: ; ooh, I’m not feeling so well today, maybe I should call out 🙄) on a beautiful summer Friday I get an extra day off over & above my 15 vacation days. Some employers make it a sick/medical bucket, so it can be used if you’re sick or if you have a routine, scheduled doctor’s appointment. I worked at a place that had sick time separate from PTO; it’s _amazing_ how unhealthy December was; right before the buckets reset it was shocking to see how many cow-orkers came down with some malady or other, especially on a Friday or the day before/after Christmas (to make it a 4 day weekend) ---

It’s an exception if you are sick or there was a death in the family or something that was an emergency. So if they had baseball tickets that they bought a month ago and scheduled it, no problem. If you decided to fuck off that morning and lied about being too sick to work, it’s bad form. ---

For the many, many people who work shit jobs, or at small companies, or worse yet both, the reality is rather different. For lots of those folks there is no ability to take time off for any reason. It’s show up as scheduled or be fired. And no, you don’t have meaningful input into the scheduling either. You’re welcome to ask; they’re welcome to ignore your ask every time. Don’t like it? Quit. The USA is not a society. It’s an economy. Run by managers and owners for managers and owners. The rest of the citizens just exist to be worked. ---

And it’s certainly improper behavior on work premises and during work hours even if the intern agrees. Which asking them out – only once, if turned down, and in a polite fashion – wouldn’t be; at least, if you did so during a break from work. ---
