Indeed that is how I learned it, but you will also see it written out all in 6/8 sonetimes.

The Star-Spangled Banner was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the thread title. A considerable number of versions are in 4/4, especially when done a cappella (e.g. at NASCAR races) and at events like the Super Bowl.
