> The old man, and his camera crew, were supposed to have been visiting the Lincoln Memorial in order to attend the Indigenous People’s March. That would be his “cause”. To draw attention to the issues championed by the Indigenous People’s March. This isn’t rocket surgery.

… Nick Sandmann wanted to draw attention to himself, and to his cause. The young man and his friends with cellphone cameras were visiting the Lincoln Memorial in order to protest abortion. That would be \*his \*“cause”. To draw attention to the issues championed by anti-abortion advocates. And Sandmann got everything he wanted and more.

The problem with your ridiculous narrative is that it could equally be applied to #bothsides. How about you just stop assuming what was going through Phillips mind at the time. Because we’ve heard Phillip’s account and it doesn’t match what you claim.

There is a world of difference between the reach of some random person on the internet and the reach of a newspaper ranked 5th in distribution in the United States. The responsibility of the ethical journalist is to minimize harm. For example from the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics:

> [@SPJ code of ethics](#):

Just because the story was “on the internet” that doesn’t obligate a news outlet to publish it. Phillips being arrested 44 years ago is not pertinent to this story. It has the potential to cause harm to Phillips and it was irresponsible of the Post to publish this.

Yes, if you wear a MAGA hat there’s apparently a minuscule chance that an elderly man might beat a drum in your vicinity. This is definitely something you should fly into hysterics about.

There are still some of us around. I always found the ACLU actions in Skokie to be incredibly inspiring, and I’m trying my hardest to keep that flame alive from those who sneer at “freeze peach”.

I actually agree that MAGA hats are a kind of hate speech. But they are protected every much as the garb the Nazis wore (or planned to wear) in Skokie.

I agree. What he actually did was also reasonable.

These are descriptors that are judgement calls. I think it’s a reasonable judgement to make about this kid based on the hat alone, and the company he kept. But a smug, arrogant, douchey teenage boy sighting? Oh man, alert the media! I mean, WTF?

That’s either untrue, or he has some kind of intellectual disability. No one with a lick of sense thinks that banging your drum in one guy’s face defuses anything.

> [@k9bfriender](#):

Shodan made that assertion. I did not express agreement with it. In fact, I explicitly stated that I don’t understand why Philips did what he did, and find it bizarre.

Nice guilt-by-association jab, BTW. I suspect Shodan and I would not look like “allies” if we were discussing something that actually matters.

Sure. But it was also reasonable to do what he did and stand his ground. Do you disagree?

And if Phillips just wanted to pass, why did he get in the kid’s face when there was plenty of room to get around him? How was passing by part of an effort to “defuse” anything? You seem to me to be contradicting your own narrative.

Also, the notion that the kid was ‘blocking’ him is crazy. Those steps are 100 feet wide. There’s also this thing called language - if someone is in your way, your first thiught should be to say, ‘excuse me, I need to get past you’, not to walk up to that person and stare them down while banging a drum in their face.

I get the sense that, as with Shodan, we would not be allies on most substantive issues. But the two passages I quoted here are just plain common sense IMO.

Had it been just that one kid, absolutely. The reason it made the news was that that one kid was surrounded by a bunch of other privileged, white kids who were mocking the indigenous people and their drum playing. You, Sam, doorhinge, and everyone else seem to completely avoid the fact that the encounter took place when both Phillips and the kid were surrounded by other teens who were chanting, dancing, and doing tomahawk chops making a complete mockery of his actions and culture. In response, Phillips got a tiny bit closer to one of the kids, and continued playing his drum. That’s it. In the face of all that racist mockery, he played his drum a little too close to a kid. And, for that, the right wing hate machine comes full bore on the guy, calling him a bully when he’s literally surrounded by dozens of white kids mocking him and his culture.

Oh, so you will threaten violence to get someone to shut up, but will not actually act out in violence.

They did a great job of communicating their intentions. Before he got between the groups, the two groups were facing off with each other, and a fight was likely brewing in short order.

Once he was involved, tensions between the groups had decreased, and violence was much less likely.

> [@](#):

> Only a racist who is trying to justify their later attacks on a group of teenagers, their families, and their school will believe that horseshit.

And only a piece of shit troll would make a statement like that. You know the intent of anyone who doesn’t agree with you? Fuck you, and fuck the cactus that has become so lonely since we became allowed to say that.

> [@](#):

> Would it really be considered reasonable to step aside for someone when it clearly looked like the old man was targeting the teenager, and neither the old man, or his entourage, had made their intentions clear? The old man, and his entourage, had plenty of room to walk around the teenager, or follow the teenager wherever he went.

If the teenager was being targeted, then stepping out of the way would have removed that target.

From what I saw, Philips was traveling more or less in a straight line between the groups. It is hard to see exactly what the student did, but he definitely moved between the time he was last in frame to when he was encountered. He was blocking Philip’s path.

Yeah, I saw a harassment case that went the same way. Where the defendant kept claiming that he wasn’t “blocking” his co-worker, as the hallways were wide enough for them to go around. They lost.

There is no way you are going to convince me that Nathan Phillips was anything other than an activist triggered by a MAGA hat, looking for a viral moment he could catch on camera.

You are right, you are set in your ways, and there is likely no way that you can be convinced that the minority was not an evil creature out for hurting little white boys. Playing the “you’ll never convince me” card is pathetic, like doorhinge’s whining that he can’t be convinced about climate change.

You refuse to see the whole thing in context. You refuse to see what was happening before Philips came on the scene, and you refuse to put the blame for the incident at anything but the feet of the minority.

I hadn’t seen that in any of the news reports, can you please show me where Philips called for their expulsion?

And the left of the time reacted in horror to the idea, because clothing you chose to wear was speech and everyone had a right to be offensive. Even though Miami was full of people who had to flee that murderous bastard, people still had a right to parade around wearing Che’s image. And I actually agreed.

And I will still agree that violence is not the appropriate response to a shirt or a hat.

But you seem to be saying that criticism is inappropriate.

Are you conflating criticism with violence?

Still do. Just also support the rights of counter protestors. Those are the ones whose speech you wish to stifle.

The situation between the CC kids and the BIs. That was going to erupt into violence in short order. His actions prevented that. During his actions, while he was putting himself in between the two groups facing off against each other, he did encounter this kid, and they did face off, but taht is a completely different situation than the one he defused by distracting anyone.

These constant accusations of racism make you look sad and foolish, and they diminish the criticisms of real racists. As a debating tactic it’s also useless, because if a person is not a racist and you call them one it just makes you look bad. And if they are racist, they aren’t going to give a shit about what you have to say about it anyway.

There was a time when a wild accusation of racism or misogyny might scare your opponent into going away because it’s such a vile thing to have attached to you. Those days are gone, and the people who diminish real racism by smearing all their opponents as racists just look pathetic and desperate.

…because a bunch of right-wing shitbags elected Trump, who normalized racist behavior. Meanwhile supposed “rational” conservatives lacked the backbone to denounce the man because they were a bunch of worthless cowardly shitbags themselves.

If a “conservative” doesn’t speak out against Trump and gets called a racist, then they need to fucking own it, because their spineless behavior supports racists. Yes, the BI’s were more defensible than Phillips. AFAIK, they did not make it physical, and kept it in the realm of free speech.

Why the fuck is this even news? Weird shit happened in the city. Weird shit always happens in the city. Weird shit happened to me last night in the city. So what? No one was hurt, nothing lasting happened, just three groups of idiots collided. That’s it.

I mean I know the answer. It’s because of social media, everyone carrying cameras/video recorders, and the fact that political symbols always cause people to start rabbling. But it’s depressing as hell to see people so obsessed with this nothingburger.

> Yes, the BI’s were more defensible than Phillips. AFAIK, they did not make it physical, and kept it in the realm of free speech.

Let’s be perfectly clear here. Your “physical” is the minuscule, inadvertent brushing of a padded winter coat that may not have happened, was likely never even felt at all, and never actually was raised by any party as an issue. And you, once again, completely ignore the actions of the group of kids surrounding Mr. Phillips, who are openly mocking him and his culture. Just so we are crystal clear on where you’re coming from.

Real racists? Like a gaggle of white privileged teenagers openly mocking an indigenous person because he has the audacity to chant and play a hand drum?

WHY the hell were those kids allowed to wear those hats in the first place? You’d think the school would’ve said, “we don’t want to wearing any political gear, you’re here to represent the school, blah blah blah”. I’m seriously wondering where the FUCK the adults were in all of this. THAT is what really upsets me. Why is nobody going after the chaperones? Who was in charge?

> It was implied (but not explicitly stated) that I am African-American. But, in my defense, Little Nemo and the rest of you hoes claimed I was making the story up. Because, you know, people of color are liars, hustlers, and schemers. Nothing that comes our from lips is the truth, just lies. You know how you white do.

So **Huey** I’ve been meaning to ask you, have you stopped beating your white yet?

People have told you over and over, that nobody thinks you’re a liar because you’re black. They think that because you’re a troll on the internet. And we’ve explained why we feel that way, as well, just as many times. If it makes you feel better to believe it’s because you’re black well hey, you do you.
As for reporting posts, it’s not about being a “snitch”, it’s just the way the board works. But again, you don’t seem to give a shit about the way this place works, because you’d rather play martyr. (Yeah, I know, I know, it’s all because you’re black and this is a white space, blah blah blah – please, we’ve heard it all over and over and over, yada yada yada)
