Covington Catholic High (in case it hasn't been mentioned already)

We now know what sort of students go to that school

One video trumps the known racist behavior, yes or no?

I don’t follow the equivalence you are trying to make; your "yes’ or ‘no’ question is too clever for me.

My point is that the entire video does not support the initial narrative and continuing social media storm. This point does not depend on the behavior of anyone not depicted in the video.

As a general statement, though, I will tell you that if you look you will find racists in every school, every party, every race, every nation.

These kids are MAGA dipshits, there in the first place for the March for Life. I wish they weren’t being raised to be ignorant, and I can only hope that their views become more sophisticated as they grow up and experience more of the world.

That said, I’m sick of seeing all my friends slobbering and wringing their hands over this incident. To me the kids’ dipshit behavior extends to their weird, shitty teenage boy mocking of Phillips’s singing. I believe the kid who issued the statement that the incident began when the school group were approached by the Black Israelites shouting homophobic epithets at them. I believe Phillips who says that he perceived tensions rising and approached the scene to defuse them. I believe the kid who issued the statement that he felt Phillips was the one coming to escalate the situation. The kid was wrong, but I don’t blame him for misunderstanding what was happening. Even if he were an adult I wouldn’t blame him for not understanding what the fuck was going on with hundreds of people all yelling and screaming and filming around him.

And people are sharing this kid’s name on social media. I don’t care how much you hate him, that shit is not fucking cool.

Mostly I’m just exhausted by everyone creaming their fucking shorts over it. All the breathless condemnation and virtue signaling is too fucking much. And the weird declarations of the kid’s “evil.” This is exactly the kind of event that exposes the worst aspects of social media. Millions of people who weren’t there are absolutely confident that they know the intentions of a few total fucking strangers. It’s rampant prejudice from all directions.

Except Phillips. He’s basically the only guy here that I like. The kids can go fuck themselves. The Black Israelites can go fuck themselves. And just about everyone losing their shit about it in my timeline can go fuck themselves too.

On reflection, I at least partially rescind what I said about “virtue signaling.” I must assume that everyone’s outrage is real. I still find it exhausting.

I have to admit: blackface, at a school event, in the 21st century, seems like a bold choice.

Ah, good old blackface.

Can we start a thread about that so conservatives can explain how it’s not racist, that young man was obviously trying, bravely, to provide more diversity and how dare you shame him?

That wasn’t just blackface. That was vantablackface.

I’ve watched some of the videos and have read some accounts of what happened, including several here in this thread. I have no idea what actually happened, but this seems to sum it up pretty well, without being too partisan. The author also comments on the overreaction and demonizing.

Just saw this posted in my Facebook feed, and immediately went into my standard debunking mode assuming that nothing this on the nose about this situation could possibly be real. First time I ever went into that mode and found out that the questionable post was, in fact, accurate.

I don’t care if the Black Israelites ‘started it’; the little shits started it when they wore a MAGA hat to an anti-abortion rally. If you want to protest abortion, then protest abortion. Don’t wear a white hood or a swastika; otherwise, people might “misunderstand” you. The only mercy I have it in my heart to give is on account of their age. I was an insensitive wise-ass when I was in my teens, too, so maybe they’ll grow out of it. But it’s important that this be a teachable moment.

I guess free speech is dead somewhere in the Potomac?

Nah, don’t rescind. Your post (#263) was awesome and I endorse it.

Basically all virtue signaling is based on real outrage, if by real you mean something that is felt. It’s the way our minds work. We pose for our tribe.

Not me of course. My thoughts tend to arrive in pairs: I always try humble brag see both sides of the issue but only because of my sheer moral superiority LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME.

Regardless of my earlier comments, if this incident shines a spotlight on all the kids flashing “white power” hand signals at their fucking basketball games and forces the school to reckon with the white supremacist environment it is clearly tolerating (if not outright encouraging), it will be a positive.

Does anyone know what the fuck is up with people wearing black all over their bodies at a “blackout” game? That’s how some are defending the apparent blackface being worn by some Covington students in those old photos. I personally find sports fanaticism to be fucking stupid in general, can’t really comment from a place of knowledge.

An old man walked up to a teenager. The old man was beating a drum just inches from the teenagers face. The old man was chanting loudly towards the teenagers face. the teenager refused to move, or to be intimidated by the old man. The old man walked away, unhindered by anyone.

The only assholes are those people who believed/still believe that it was the teenager who was harassing the old man.

What are the chances that the school invites Phillips in as a special guest speaker?

He comes in, makes a speech about the Native American plight, has a photo-op with student body, handshakes all around and everyone feels good about themselves.

That’s how I’d play it.

Totally with you. I don’t think they should be doxxed though. And the way the kid is being held up as some ultimate personification of evil is over the top.

“Redcap”, surely, having the advantage of also being the name of a type of murderous and malevolent goblin.

While I acknowledge the good-naturedness of you reply, I’ll rescind if I want to

I am generally exhausted by all the outrage, but I feel it is important to regard people as basically honest about their emotions, even if I feel they are sometimes misguided or overwrought.

That’s how I would too. I think this is how any normal school would play it.

Reading the comments - apparently this was a ‘blackout’ game, and the kids are saying they had full-body paint, so it wasn’t blackface per se. I will say that teenage boys are often stupid enough that they really didn’t make the connection, or if they did, they truly thought making it full body paint made it OK.

On the other hand, whoever was in charge of keeping the student body under control (traditionally one of the vice-principals) should have sent those boys either home or to the showers to wash that shit off.

It speaks very poorly of the school.
