I don’t know where people get the idea that Phillips wanted to go through the kids to some other place and they didn’t let him pass, he deliberately went to them to face them off:

Nothing about Nathan Phillip’s behaviour suggests that he was trying to protect the kids. What it looked like to me was that he saw that kid smirking in a Maga hat, and decided to get up in his face about it and provoke him into a reaction the cameras could capture. The kid didn’t take the bait.

Out of everyone involved in this sorry mess, the Covington Catholic kids come out looking the best. They were confronted by racist assholes, and kept their composure remarkably well for a group of 12-17 year olds. When one of the racists calls a kid a ‘faggot’, a kid from the school can he heard responding, ‘What’s wrong with that?’ When a black kid in the school was told that the others would kill him and harvest his organs, the other kids hugged him and said, ‘You know we love you’.
In the meantime, Nathan Phillips has his 15 minutes of fame and is doing the interview rounds, suggesting that the kids he was supposedly ‘protecting’ should maybe be expelled from school.
So really it’s all about attention. He had his ‘narrative’ stolen, so he wants people’s careers destroyed and children expelled from school. He’s a real saint. He’s trying make himself out to be a victim, because that’s all he knows how to do.

It occurred in front of the backdrop of the Ferguson Police Department engaging in a history of police brutality, excessive bail and fines, and government-sanctioned racism against people of color. The record bears this out. Just as white supremacists likeyourself are quick to point out the extenuating circumstances for the MAGA-hat children’s behavior.
