The range is 1.5 octaves. It’s a bit iffy for average Joe and Jane maybe, but not for a female singer. Hell, I have a bit more range than that, but I am an awful singer, pitchwise.
They literally would have been better off getting Roseanne Barr to sing the anthem.

Biden and the Dems want to define which keys are acceptable for our national anthem! If we let them, they will allow only one, politically correct key, and cancel all other, equally valid keys of freedom loving Americans.
They are coming for our keys. We must be prepared to defend them, whatever the cost!
Ugh. That was painful.
Yeah, but you’ve really got to belt the highest note. Most people can’t do that at the outskirts of their range in either direction. My range (when I’m not out of practice) is a bit more than two octaves and I still have to be pretty careful about where I start if I want to sing the stupid thing.
Well, her tonal center for the most part was F#/Gb major, which incorporatesall the black piano keys., so there’s that.
She sounds like she’s attempting to be operatic, but…she is not an opera singer.
She almost nailed the elusive brown note.
I posted in the other forum my favorite comment from the comments in the YouTube version:
Simon Cowell - “That’s a no for me”
There’s a reason why even the big stars tend to have backing tracks when they do big events.
Honestly, if this was just some singer doing their first big performance, I wouldn’t make a huge deal out of this. She’s nervous and lost her pitch center. She’s tensing up, which makes the pitch tend to go up when singing. And when she notices, she gets flustered. Her tone is actually fairly good and her phrasing and rubato (going off time) isn’t the worst I’ve heard.
But this isn’t being presented as some young singer’s first large performance. It clearly was supposed to be really good. But they couldn’t pull it off. They don’t even know the tricks on how to help a mediocre singer sound better. They just do not know what they’re doing.
Even the Nazis understood spectacle. They did their best to make everything look sharp and good, as part of the appeal. These guys come off as a copy of a copy of a copy. It’s like having some dude with crayons come in and try to draw a masterpiece.
And yet, somehow, some people still find this appealing.
This. What the heck is up with the pronunciation? I have a child on the austism spectrum, and even her pronunciation is a lot closer. I’m pretty sure the lady in question was not billed as an example of someone with special needs rising to the occaision.
What is her background?
Her name is Sailor Sabol, and she has a YouTube channel that’s a mix of singing and some sort of rightward-ranting “comedy”.
Or I should say had a channel, because between the time I looked at it a couple of days ago and now, she has dumped all the content from it and left a forlorn “Unknown, Who cares” header.
An odal rune from what I’ve heard.
Ahh. She’s a college freshman. I feel bad for her.
Honestly, I do as well. Regardless of her personal beliefs or whatever led her to be showcased in this way, this is something that will follow her around for the rest of her life like the “Star Wars Kid”.

My wife’s friend drunkenly home invaded people so often, the cops knew to dump her at our house. If she wasnt a white she, she’d definitely have been dead many time over.
Yeah. In case it wasn’t clear in my previous post, I am putting the blame squarely on CPAC for hiring her in this context.
Like I said, she comes off as a young singer who was nervous at her first big gig. If she’d given this performance at some church or even some local sports thing, it wouldn’t be too big a deal. It would be a learning experience. But putting her on such a big stage where expectations were high and the desire to find fault also high, it was a recipe for disaster.
And, I’m sorry, but her pronuciation and tone are fine. If she’d stayed on key and were a bit better with her time, I don’t think anyone would have said anything about her tone or pronuciation.
It’s not entirely not her fault. She did apply for the job, was qualified based on her bashing of the left, and then accepted it when offered.
OTOH, it is entirely the fault of those who hired her, but that is to be expected, given their general track record of hiring people based on ideology rather than talent or skill.
Trump in a nutshell.
She sings like a reasonably-talented college freshman. And the mistakes she made were those of a reasonably-talented college freshman. It is objectively a terrible performance, but I agree that the responsibility lies with CPAC organizers for hiring her.
