No, she didn’t nearly get it. It was entirely tone-deaf. Wtf…
My ears need bleach…

The several, not the one.
Which is worse - mocking an adult who made a series of bad choices, or denying that adult agency? She made her choices. People who are berating those who mock are taking away her rights as an adult.
I don’t see it as mocking her to say that the performance sucked. It did suck, it well and truly sucked. It’s more of a criticism. Jaysus, did you hear that?
So far the only good thing to come out of it is that someone turned me on the 4/12/93 Garcia, Weir, Welnick a capella performance at a Giants game. That one is now posted on my American Government class web page.
That’s a goodie. I posted it in the Pit.
Thank you for that! I looked for it so I could credit the poster and then couldn’t find it.
Outstanding~enjoyed it greatly. Thanks both of you!
Sure, she’s young. And she’s in front of a big audience. And a capella singing of such a difficult song can take real mastery. That’s why you can’t compare it to performances like this:
Though if you’re going to try to own the phrasing of “free”, you could take lessons from this girl. Why didn’t CPAC use her? Oh, wait…I SEE the problem…
Dang! Splendid from start to finish.
I hadn’t chimed in on that one yet, but as a guy with 130+ GD shows under his belt … I hadn’t seen/heard it before either.
So, so good. Thanks for sharing.
Well, she does flub the “light” in “early light” pretty badly. ouch I know, I know, she’s 7! Fantastic job – how a 7-year-old has pipes like that, I don’t know.
While her musicianship and showmanship are awesome, and I don’t want to be a Debby Downer about her fantastic performance, it could be that she’s wrecking her voice with too much “belting” to get a mature sound at so young an age, which can produce vocal fold nodes and other laryngeal damage. A healthy child voice generally ought to sound childlike, without such a strong timbre.
On the other hand, she might be one of the very exceptional child singers to whom a brassier “belting” sound comes naturally and doesn’t overstrain the voice. As a rule, though, I wish entertainment venues and impresarii (?) would not encourage child soloists to sing taxing pieces in a mature style. There are too many kids trying to imitate the adult voices of famous pop stars or opera singers while having no idea of healthy technique, and their teachers (if any) aren’t always protecting them properly.
I was wondering that (the effect such singing has on her vocal cords) when she started using the more “growling” tone she when she is ramping up the emotion in the second half of the song to the end.
Yeah, no denying that she killed it, but I found myself getting a little anxious during the video for precisely those reasons.
Yup, a person taking on a job clearly out of their league out of hubris, giving an abysmal performance marred by acts of pure self aggrandizement and then wildly cheered by conservatives.
A perfect metaphor for the Trump administration.
She not only hit them, she beat them until they confessed.
You keep emphasizing her age: she’s a “teenager”, you remind us, she’s “nineteen years old.” So does her age matter or not?
If you’re just generally against any mockery of anyone for doing an incompetent job for a repulsive cause, okay. If you’re saying that in general it’s not so bad, but her youth makes it bad, say that.
In my opinion, she’s old enough to be held accountable for her decisions. She can vote, she can join the army, she can be tried as an adult. That last one is most significant: she’s at an age where she’s held accountable for bad choices and faces adult-level consequences for them. In this case, the adult-level consequences are that when she does a crap job performing for white supremacists, she becomes the butt of jokes.
