Cracked eggshells: back in the carton or in the trash?

*note to self…never, ever eat omlettes at SkipMagic’s house. EVER

That’s a good point…we pay for trash disposal but can recylcle as much stuff as we want for free including egg cartons, but they have to be relatively clean.

How ya doing, tanookie? Haven’t run into you in a while.

Hiya

I’m doing pretty well. Just coming out of the sleepless new parent stage again! Still looking for a social life so I come here for conversation and amusement.

How’re you?

(Sorry for the continued hijack folks)

I’m good. We are just getting past my son’s 4th birthday parties. Time flies.

If you check out the thread in this forum on “What is there to do in Stow, MA?” there are several new Boston area people around.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

I store my eggs in the carton, in the fridge (although I’ll take some out to warm for baking or meringues etc) - in all cases empty shells go in the compost container (a plastic box about 6 inches square) and the carton goes back in the fridge. I’ve never heard of people putting the shells in the carton and it strikes me as a really weird (and not very clean) thing to do

<adds new item to list of “things people do that are vaguely gross”>

Raw eggs are bad for you since they contain bacteria. Unless you’re rinsing out the shells before you put them back, some of that bacteria is going to get on the carton…eww. Maybe it’ll die in the fridge, but it doesn’t seem worth the risk.

My wife used to put them back in the carton.

I broke her of that habit real quick.

Nasty habit.

Avoid the hash browns, too, while you’re at it.
