I know this has been brought up before, but today it has finally sent me over the edge.
Folks, typos happen. The rest of us readers are sentient beings and I suspect that given context, we can figure out WHAT THE FUCK YOU MEANT as long as the error isn’t too egregious.
So please, PLEASE I BEG YOU, resist the temptation to immediately repost and say “Oops, I meant “DID” instead of “DIG” in my last post, of course.”
Yeah, no shit, I figured it out.
If you’re such a perfectionist that errors like that, left unexplained, will cause you to toss and turn all night, why not make it a rule for yourself that you will preview every post?
While I am at it, let me also bitch about the fucking shepherd’s pie I paid good money for last night. IT FUCKING SUCKED.
Also, I have a headache, and my fucking dishwasher is leaving food particles on my drinking glasses which irks me to no end.

I couldn’t agree more. As irked as I may be by having to stop and figure out what someone meant, that’s much less that the irritation of another whole post about the typo. Even if you left out a “not” and the whole meaning changes, context gives enough clues to what you meant.
This is not a license for the “well, you knew what I meant” school of sloppiness, just a nod toward the efficiency of not correcting every little thing.

We all have come to realize that the board periodically posts multiple times when submit was hit just once. When that happens, I assume that the person whose post was doubled (or tripled, or quadded, or whatever) did not do it intentionally, and in fact is somewhat sorry about the excess load on the server and burden on the reader.
Therefore, please, please, I beseech you, DO NOT post to say you’re sorry for the multi-post. We know you didn’t do it intentionally, and adding the apology does nothing but put additional load on the server and further burden the reader.

Not all typos are created equal.
I _dig_ CrankyAsAnOldMan
is very different from
I _did_ CrankyAsAnOldMan
I am not sure context would necessarily allow the reader to be sure.

I agree **Cranky**. Although I will point out that for me, previewing doesn’t always work. Especially these days. I probably preview 99% of all the posts I submit, but lately I get in a rush to get the post out before another agonizing sdmb gridlock hits. So errors still get by me.

No, no, no… we already know exactly what you meant. We just want to be sure you know what you meant, and the only way to be certain that you do is for you to re-post to clarify your initial post which really needs no clarification in the first place but rather acknowledgement that what appears unclear is in fact clear even though it appeared clearly unclear.

I’m with you on the appology for the double post, however, the correction post -
A. absolutely necessary if the meaning is in jeopardy (I know you admitted this)
but also
B. If the person who typed the post doesn’t correct the spelling, frequently some one else will. YOu know that it happens. Given that certain board ‘insider’ phrases come out of typos (OG smash, Gotchya, and the 3rd one is slipping my mind presently), I understand the impulse to quickly step in and correct it.

**wring,** I believe the phrase you’re looking for is FUCKO OFF!
I generally agree with the above points about making corrections, with one exception: To this copyeditor’s mind,\* it’s important to correct an omitted or mistyped “not.” Especially if it was rendered as “now.” That’s very different!
\*Even copyeditors can be poor spellers, and worse typists. I’m a great speller, but my fingers don’t always know it.

Heehee, when I posted to Euty’s thread about the new RI Mr. Potato Head license plates, it took so long for the post to go through that I forgot I’d posted. So my cursor was still in the “Your Reply” box… and I managed to somehow hit enter while it was still processing my post.
In the meantime, I went to IM a friend on AIM. Somehow, the “Hey” I meant to send to my friend on AIM got put in the reply box, so my post had a random “hey” at the end. I almost posted “Um, that hey doesn’t belong there” then thought “God, I hate it when people post to say ‘I of course meant WEIRD not WIERD’ and stuff like that, I’ll just let it go.”
Then **Cranky** read my mind. And what’s up with the dishwashers? Ours is sucking too. Food particles all over. Gah.

it’s an international dishwasher plot. Mine is doing a piss poor job too and I’m all the way in Australia!
Hate, hate, hate people who do corrections which are not necessary. I don’t mind corrections when the meaning is obscure but simple typos? Gah. Meh. Feh.
