We have two brothers who are junkies living across the alley from us. Their house doesn’t have windows anymore and they often don’t have running water. They will empty their buckets of waste in their front yard at night and my neighbor can’t use his front porch because of the smell. Their mother is in a nursing home and won’t sell the house because she knows her sons will have no where else to go and if she cashed out the house they would take any money and be dead of an OD by the end of the weekend. The were going around the neighborhood trying to fill up water jugs from people’s hoses until folks got wise and turned their yard water off inside when they weren’t using it, so now they go down to the water fountain at the traffic circle to fill up. Do you have any idea how long it takes to fill up gallons of water jugs from a small water fountain? I do: one time I walke through the circle to go to dinner and they were filling up their jugs and when I walked home, they were still at it. So yeah, we know about bad neighbors. ---

Reading this thread makes me glad I have only one neighbor and she’s as nice as could be, and about 1/8 mile away. ---

Agreed, my crazy neighbor isn’t that crazy at all. He edges his yard’s lawn with a pair of scissors, but that’s about it - oh, and he takes his electric-powered lawn mower and mows lawns for as far as the extra-long cord will go, as long he’s not crossing the road. He once yelled at the mailman for kissing me when we were standing on the sidewalk out front of the house. The mailman informed him that wasn’t his mistress, it’s his wife, as Grumpy Oldster was failing to recognize that his across-the-street neighbor is also his mailman, and had been for a few years. ---

Really? With all the time he spends in his/other neighbors’ front lawns, I’d think he’d see an awful lot. Still, he’s miles better than the woman who used to live across the hall in an apartment building and screamed at her kids/the boyfriend-of-the-month every single day of the year. She (probably) wasn’t crazy either, just mean as hell. ---

The mother “claimed” to be homeschooling her kids, but she must have had an in with someone, because they were always running around, causing trouble. Their yard was full of trash, they never cut the grass, and good god, I don’t even want to THINK about what the house was like. They were okay when we first moved in, but gradually things just got worse. We could hear the older girl screaming hysterically and incoherently all the time – it sounded like she was going through some kind of drug withdrawal or something. (They were seriously messed up). Thank god they finally defaulted on their mortage. Of course the people who live there now are a pain in the ass, (setting off fireworks despite the fact that our yards are so close together), but they’re not nearly as bad. And don’t even get me started on our OTHER next-door neighbor’s ex-wife. (How he ended up with her I’ll never know) ---

I feel left out. All my neighbhbours are nice and quiet. The little kids even set up a Kool-Ade stand sometimes, I tip heavily, they love me. ---

When I bought my house, my neighbor to the south was happy because my house had been unoccupied for three years, and it would be good to have someone there finally. Then I went to work in Mexico for a year. After “good to have you back,” I spent four months at home and then went to work in Canada for a year. One year later, back in Mexico for a year and a half. Seven months later, here I am in China for three years. 😃 ---

Now, that is just wrong! Today, when I got home, CNL was outside, scowling around. I gave her a cheerful wave and greeting. She came over and filled my ears with her complaints that if everyone was so friendly, why was _she_ pulling her own weeds? Doesn’t everyone know that her doctor told her to avoid dust and polin? (BS, her husband died in the 80’s and had a great pension plan that paid her a monthly amount and extra for the children. She’s never worked. Now that the kids are over 25, that money went away. She seriously resents that, it was the money her husband had left her./Back Story) When she started in on the teenagers who she has seen doing my yard, I mentioned that I paid them to do it. More outrage happened, they should come cheerfully to her door, equiped with rakes and such and beg to be allowed to enter her yard and clean up for her. By that time, my starving cats were banging against the windows, so I picked up my shopping bags and told her that it was always nice to talk to her and walked away. ---

Yup. If the teens came up to volunteer she’d probably yell at them to get out of her yard, or complain afterwards how they’d done it all wrong. Perhaps you should (not) wonder aloud why no one volunteers, what with her sparkling personality… ---

Guess I don’t have it so bad. There is about a foot wife strip of land separating my property to neighbor’s driveway. Got yelled at for my mower spraying grass clippings on their driveway. I adjusted my mowing pattern for a while, but I like the other pattern better. Also, they put up a snow fence last fall along same property line so they could discourage my dead leaves from blowing into their yard. Never ever seen anybody else do anything like that. I was out with the leaf blower when they left their house and I pointed at the snow fence and gave them a thumbs up, good job kind of thing. They took it down a couple days later. Honestly the people previously in this house had a small day care, it would seem to me that we would be an upgrade. No kids, 2 dogs when we moved in, down to one now. ---
