I was wondering about favorite examples of creator released music on the internet. (I will not say legal mp3s, for fear of a certain site being mentioned. Search the archives if you want to know about the term legal mp3s.) I have seen good examples of such things on [mcchris.com](http://mcchris.com/) , [somethingawful.com](http://www.somethingawful.com/download/arc/) , (the music, not the flash animation humor, which is much too random for me) and the The Kleptones invite you to… “A Night At The Hip-Hopera”
Any other examples people would like to volunteer? Link to homepages, or wikiarticles, not directly to songs, please.

The Smashing Pumpkins released their last album _Machina II_ free to fans over the Internet way back when. I’m not sure if you can still get it online, but they did it.

Pretty much any record label dedicated to non-mainstream music will have free mp3s available, and the artists sites may have them as well. [music.download.com](http://music.download.com) is another good place.

A well-known example is when Wilco was dropped by Atlantic (IIRC) when the label didn’t like their album _Yankee Hotel Foxtrot_. Wilco put it up for free download on their [website](http://www.wilcoworld.net/), and various music critics rated it as one of the best albums of the year. After they got signed again, they released the album on CD, and it went (multi?)platinum.
