You have to keep in mind that Russia is still a country in which there are credible ongoing internal threats to national security. Not to mention lots of missing armaments. An administration that has enemies may need to neutralize them in any way they can. A person who keeps closer tabs than I do on the prevailing conspiracy theories in the USA could probably compile a list of people whose health has been adversely affected by their visible opposition to the paradigm. Starting with Paul Wellstone, and working your way down the list. ---

You do realize you’re doing the exact same thing that Putin does when called into question: deflect the challenge away from him by criticizing the US. That’s a rotten apples to tangy oranges comparison.
