And futzing around with QEMM to get that 384K of extended memory. No, expanded memory. Extended? Expanded? Gah!

And remember futzing with IRQs to install something like a sound card and no internet to help?

Not fun.

Going to be a drooling mass in some chair when I’m 94 and, all of a sudden, I’m going to shoot up straight, look my daughter in the eye, and clearly say “Goddamned DIP switches, whoever invented these things can join me in Hell”, promptly dropping dead after.

All of the above, plus all those frickin’ drivers for video, mice, _printers_!

And you had to _build_ drivers for Novell Netware for each model of network card, which involved about two hours of swapping in one of 30 diskettes about 3 dozen times.

Kids these days have no idea what a revolution “plug-n-play” was in Windows.

Alright, got everything today, busy installing stuff. Curious what antivirus you all recommend.

Most people I know stick with standard Windows Defender that comes with Windows. Unlike the old days, it’s actually very capable in Win10/11

Seconding Jophiel’s recommendation of just sticking with Windows Defender. That’s what most everyone does nowadays.

I was both surprised and relieved at that fact when I built mine two years ago. Makes life easier. (My old computer was still running AVGFree. It was terrible.)
