If you recall the movie The Right Stuff, you may recall the the Mercury Seven astronauts were less than happy about just riding in a space capsule. They were pilots, and expected to fly their spacecraft, but the spacecraft was to follow a predetermined flight plan, so there was no need to allow them any control. Still, the astronauts insisted, if they weren’t allowed to fly, then they were just … spam in a can.
