Just an aside:

I’ve read through this thread only a little bit before jumping in. I’m noticing that clues with blanks are apparently absent (I could have overlooked them). Is that by a rule of this thread game, or just kind of an ethic that such clues are “too easy”?

The person who chose the word will be the sole judge of the entries. Maybe they like fill-in-the-blanks. Maybe they like puns and word play. Maybe they like really difficult and subtle clues. Maybe they like softball pop culture clues. The uncertainty is what makes this game fun.

There were actually a few unexpected ones here. Great job everyone! I like the compactness and playfulness of this clue:

It was the one to beat, for me, from the beginning. I did like “2002 Diesel vehicle,” as well, with the extra hint of info without giving it away, but I gotta hand it to the first post with that wordplay. I had completely forgotten about that movie. I was thinking people would also riff on XXX for “turkey,” but maybe not so many bowlers here.
