I’ll be getting my first hormone level test results tomorrow. I’ve been on the pill since 1987, and in the last year have had irregular periods, spotting, skipping, doubling up on the next, PMS like I’ve never had - I cried through the whole month of July last summer and that’s not like me at all. My face is breaking out with the PMS like a teenager, a couple times I’ve had cramps and I never have those, and I’ve been getting headaches 2-3 times a month which I also only ever had rarely with tension.
So, when I went in for my yearly PAP and checkup for another year of pill Rx, I mentioned all this and my doc said, yep, lets get some tests going so at least there’s a baseline, but it sounds like you’re starting. Yippee. I’m just hoping it doesn’t drag on for 10-15 years, I’ll be happy to get it over with! Heat makes me mental, so if staying on the pill helps mitigate any of that, I’m staying on it for as long as possible.
56 here, was just saying to myself “Wow, it’s been eight months since my last period” and guess what arrived? I’m one of the fortunate/unfortunates who wears something everyday, though, so I’m always semi-prepared. And I got to take some of that pricey medicine for my heavy periods that I had filled right before the brakes got put on, so that counts as a plus. All the women in my family go through this on the late side (mid-to-late fifties for all of us) and pretty symptom-free. Hot flashes are nothing like what my boss goes through, and no other issues that can’t have other causes. And even this surprise period wasn’t a huge deal…it was nothing like my old normal.
So of course, having now said all that aloud, I will be a weeping, foggy, sleep-deprived shrew ripping my clothes off in the frozen foods aisle by next week.
My migraines increased in frequency and intensity over the past couple of years. I now carry generic Imitrex with me wherever I go - I’ve used it twice since the doctor prescribed it in December, and it actually works! In my youth, I very rarely took any pills, but between that and the Ambien, I’ve become quite the prescription drug enthusiast. I’m hoping the migraines will subside when (if?) I finally make through the transition.
Drug-addled weeping, foggy, sleep-deprived shrew ripping your clothes off in the frozen foods aisle. I’ll meet you at the Whole Foods.
Urgh. I’m just 45 but haven’t had a period yet this year. Was hoping that was a sign that they’d get less frequent, but I guess I’ll carry protection at all times, expecting Aunt Irma to arrive whenever it’s most inconvenient.
I’ve been carrying Imitrex with me every day for years. I get them every single cycle for three days before and three after. I love that it works for me because some people aren’t so lucky, but if I had three wishes I might use one of them to banish migraines forever.
Seriously: 1. invisibility 2. perfect body 3. no more migraines.
My mom was in her mid-50s and had gone for at least six months without a period. Then I get a call at 2:30am from her begging me to go to Walmart to get her some tampons because she couldn’t get up off the toilet.
She had super-heavy periods off and on for a few months before she got tired of it and went to her doctor. She had an endrometrial ablation done and that was the end of it.
Yep. is right. She woke up to a mess, managed to make it to the bathroom, couldn’t leave after that. Fortunately she grabbed the phone on her way to the bathroom.
