Cruise Ships & Immigration/Customs

Just got back from a two week cruise in Asia, Singapore to Shanghai, with stops in Thailand, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Thailand was the only one that didn’t make a big deal out of immigration, while China was the only one where immigration was really a problem. Vietnam wanted us all to have a form with us while in the country, but made it pretty painless to just get it stamped as we went off the ship.

China seemed to think it was important to have someone spend five minutes staring at Every. Single. Passport. Ended up getting off the ship three hours late, with several people around me wondering if they were going to make their flights that day. We had a transfer to the airport for people with flights after 2pm, and even that was pushing it. We didn’t get to the airport until almost noon.

I guess perhaps harbors are preferentially located where the weather is not rough? Even Melbourne uses helicopters, and we are by no means a major shipping port. The big ports started far earlier.

Pilots in the English Channel, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world board from boats. The receiving vessel would normally ‘make a lee’ to allow an easy transfer.
