Speculation is rampant. There’s a whole associated group of websites that are turning up all the time as viral marketing for this movie.

People are wetting themselves speculating that this is a Cthulhu movie.

If it is, it seems to be leaning toward Cthulhu-as-Godzilla type fare, which sort of skeeves me out. I mean, it’s got big-budget disaster blockbuster written all over it. We have a mangle Statue of Liberty in the trailer, for god’s sake. That’s never a good sign.

It’ll be a visual treat, I’m sure, but if it is a movie about R’lyeh rising, I hope they don’t give short shrift to the cyclopean, rugose, abominable Lovecraftian magic. I hope it’s not “Dread Cthulhu marches down Wall Street, batting military helicopters out of the air with one unholy appendage.”

I remember people talking about it when the trailer first aired. There was speculation of a Cthulu movie then to, but I’m not sure I can figure out why, other then it has something big coming out of the water and wrecking stuff.

With the Japanese connection, I’m gussing its a Godzilla (or another of the Japanese movie monsters) movie.

At this point, I kinda hope it’s not Cthulhu. The trailer has too much of an Independence Day/Day After Tomorrow vibe.

But people are claiming that you can hear a woman say “R’lyeh” at 0:38 of the trailer. I can hear something, but I’m not convinced it’s that.

Hrm.

Sounds like a big booming female voice saying R’lyeh, to me at least.

And tagruato.jp and their deep sea drilling.

And slusho.jp and their deep sea… slushies.

I do kind of think the big budget Cthulhu thing is wishful thinking…

Heh. How do you pronounce R’lyeh? If you told me just about any noise was spelled “R’ly” I’d probably believe you.

But for what it’s worth, I don’t hear it. Just the monsters roar at ':38.

Tried some googling around, lotta speculation but couldn’t find any actual evidence that it was a Cthulu movie. So far all that seems to have been suggested is that its about some sort of big monster that comes from the ocean and there’s some sort of Japanese tie in.

And the trailer doesn’t really seem to have any sort of Lovecraft flavor at all. Doesn’t seem much point in using (paying for? does someone still own the rights to Lovecraft’s stories?) a popular mythos for your movie and then not advertising the fact.

Cthulhu is a biped, so that’s mixed at best.

Wikipedia’s article about the movie makes it sound like the Cthulhu talk comes from a mixup between the marketing for this movie and an online RPG.

Heh. Not showing the monster is pretty much the only way the Cthulhu mythos works. Funny thing is, the monsters aren’t really scary, unless you just don’t have any weapons. It works better as literature than a movie.

Guy A: “Look, it’s a monster beyond mortal comprehension! A dread presence indescribable which weakens our sanity from it’s mere presence!”

Guy B: “Dude, it’s an ugly mutant squid. Let me get my bazooka and we’ll can open a 24-hour Sushi restaurant in its skull.”

Sort of like the Aliens from _Aliens_. You have to keep coming up with reasons the heroes don’t have weaponry, or don’t have enough, or they’re cut off and wandering around alone in the dark, or are outnumbered 100 to 1, because they’re actually pretty pathetic against a man with a machine gun.

Almost everything about this movie to be found on the web, including the discussion of its Cthulhu-like premise, is little more than speculation.

The movie’s promotional gimmick has been “secrecy, secrecy, and more secrecy,” extending all the way to the freakin’ _title_, which has not yet been revealed.

It’s quite possible that more details will be [coming soon](http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=12367), but up to now, anybody who claims to know something specific is talking out of his ass.

Are we talking about the same Cthulhu mythos? The mythos featuring the giant god-being who doesn’t even die when you drive a ship through him? The mythos featuring amorphic entities of shifting protoplasm without any vital organs?

Are we talking about the same _Aliens_? The ultra-strong, ultra-quick, armor-plated Xenomorphs who spew deadly acid when shot?

You’re the guy who always tells the others there’s nothing to worry about and then dies first, you know that?

I am convinced that there is no Cthulhu link to this movie. “Slusho” just doesn’t fit with the mythos. There’s a Japanese company involved, and a giant monster. Occam’s razor suggests that the movie will be a spin on the Japanese giant monster film.
