Why is Kraft Dinner such a large part of candian cultural lore? I hear and see references to it on the web all the time. Here in the US, Kraft “Macaroni and Cheese” is marketed primarily to kids (or busy moms). How did it become the _ne plus ultra_ of Canadian food pop culture?

And why is it called Kraft Dinner up there? Does it actually say that on the box?

Could the recent surge in its popularity be due to the Barenaked Ladies?

“If I had a million dollars (if I had a million dollars)
We wouldn’t have to eat Kraft Dinner (But we WOULD eat Kraft Dinner!)
Yeah, we’d just eat MORE - and with all those fancy Dijon ketchups”

So, do you hosers actually put ketchup on your mac and cheese? I was just getting to accept the concept of vinegar on french fries.

Although I have to say I like the store brand better. (The cheese is more consistent. Sorry.)

How the hell does she make it? I’m not one to bash Kraft Dinner - I love the stuff - but in no way does it taste like M&C from scratch. Unless your wife makes M&C from scratch using cheapo noodles and powdered cheese or the two of you have no taste buds, there’s no way it tastes the same. M&C from scratch tastes like CHEESE. Kraft Dinner tastes like, well, Kraft Dinner. Despite the ads saying it’s the ‘cheesiest’, the taste has no resemblence to real cheese. Does your wife need a recipe for M&C?

When I eat KD, I have it with Dave’s Insanity Sauce[sup]TM[/sup], A-1 steak sauce, and possibly some ketchup. If I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll have some mustard on top of it all, though not too much.

Do you mean she buys elbow noodles and cheese powder and makes it like that? Cuz that _is_ exactly the same… I used to have Mom make it for me like that all the time.

Now I prefer having shell noodles with real cheese (cheddar and mozza) grated over the cooked noodles with a little butter and milk to make it creamy… mmmmm…

NO ketchup though! My buddy Liam liked ketchup on his… and he has a bottle… you won’t believe this… of the _purple_ ketchup in his fridge… ewwww!!!

Uh, not really, since it won’t let me see it.

So what is the answer?

To me, Kraft Dinner seems like a really stupid name. Sort of like those cans of “Drink” from the movie Repo Man.

Try [this](http://www.kraftcanada.com/controller?cmd=PROD_DISPLAY_ARTICLE&lang=EN&ID=21965&t=p). And if that isn’t disturbing, [this should do the trick](http://www.kraftdinner.com/index.cgi).

The tolerance just oozes around here, sometimes.

It has nothing to do with tolerance, it has to do with description. “Kraft Macaroni and Cheese” = you know that it is macaroni and cheese. “Kraft Dinner” = ??? could be anything.

Would you name a product “General Mills Lunch” ? “Kellogg’s Breakfast”? It just strikes me as a little stupid to not mention the actual food present, but rather the meal it should be eaten for.
