# Curb Your Enthusiasm 10/21

To me, watching Curb Your Enthusiasm is like eating a sourball. It’s almost uncomfortable to the point of being unbearable, and really the whole point is just to get through it and feel the relief as it passes. Last night’s episode really brought this point home. Larry just can’t get a break. He brings some of it on himself, but damn this guy just gets humiliated, beaten up, and bruised over and over again. And I can’t seem to look away.

Well, [there was speculation whether Larry David would write his real-life separation and divorce into this year’s script](http://www.eonline.com/news/article/index.jsp?uuid=ad9c316d-6adc-4c1e-9d55-fc4bad728381). Now we know.
It’s good that he had enough humility to make himself the villain of the separation. (Though I’m not sure how he could have done otherwise in the context of this show.)

I’m somebody who thinks he brings most all of his hardships onto himself but I think it’s great that he’s willing to let his character be an asshole. I also think it’s cool that he made himself the jerk in CYE split, but that’s probably the only way he could have made it funny.

Geez, is the show still running? What season are they on now? I only get to watch it on DVD, so I’m a little out of it. For my money, however, in terms of unbearable, Larry hit the high water mark early on (Season One, I believe), when he and Cheryl went to dinner at the home of the ex-porn actor and his psycho wife. The third time that Larry has to go back into that house I was swearing at the TV and screaming at Larry to get the hell away from there. It was grievously unbearable. But, like you, I just couldn’t look away.
It surprises me, as well, that this board has such a fondness for _The Office_, but apparently no interest in CYE (given that they both involve squirm humor, to some degree). Or was CYE thoroughly covered in previous years? I suppose I should search…

David has descended into fratboy humor in recent years. We enjoyed the first few seasons of CYE, but when I bother to tune in now it’s all dick and pussy jokes, with little to redeem it.

Not even sure what that’s supposed to mean, but I’m going to assume it’s some sort of reference to the series, rather than you just being a prick, since that would be inappropriate for this forum. I’m not a prude and I have nothing against humor of that nature. But David is capable of much more and it smacks of laziness born of too much money in the bank and contempt for the audience.

The humor seems less organic now. More and more, Larry’s character proactively sets in motion awkward situations rather than via reaction.
Take the scene in the latest episode, where a phone rings during dinner at the Greene’s and Larry insists on taking it and it gets physical. I don’t think the Larry of earlier seasons would have done all that. The writers seem to be resorting to squeezing as much Larry David’s (lack of) tact as possible. And some of the jokes also seem forced, like Primo, the restaurant owner, “choosing” Cheryl.

I think this was funniest episode this season, right after the season opener with the ingenious plan to pretend to forget the day of a party.
I also liked how Jeff and Larry reordered their water after they forgot which glass belonged to whom.
