Curious when enough is enough? [Der Trihs]

Um, no. In fact, I pointed out that Dio could contribute positively, when the mood struck him. But good on you for pointing that out in order to refute the quote… in which I pointed that out.

I actually didn’t have nearly the problem with Dio others have and think we’d get along fine if we met IRL(amongst other things, I think his IRL personality bears little relation to his online persona) however calling him an expert, much less a “Masters level” expert at religious studies is ridiculous.

Yes, he knew more than most dopers and clearly had studied it somewhat, but he was hardly Tamerlane and considering the mistakes I saw him make I’d say he was more along the level of someone who’d taken some religious studies courses in college.

Beyond that, the idea that someone who insists that Boston College, Nortre Dame, and BYU aren’t religious schools is actually an expert on religious studies is absurd.

Okay, that makes more sense.

Meh. I haven’t looked at most of the warnings but I think at least the one from 4/27 is unfair unless anyone here can tell me of a way to be against gay marriage that’s not bigoted. And because god says so sounds like bigotry to me.

Hahaa, at tommendebb in that thread! “Confounded by new ideas” is the new bigotry.

Because I do “knock it off”. And I have gotten two warnings over the years; one for personal insult (that I don’t think was one), and one of which was just a misunderstanding on the mod’s part (confusing “you” as a inclusive term for people in general, for you as in the poster I was talking to).

People get banned on this board mainly by getting in mod’s faces and not backing down. Not for being unpopular.

No. You may “knock it off” for a day or two, but then you’re back posting the exact same stuff (often even using the exact same wording) that got you the mod note in the first place. Over and over and over again. Posters get banned all the time for repeatedly ignoring mod instructions.

n.b.: I’m not suggesting that you be banned from the MB. But 12 mod notes in the last year alone for the same basic thing in GD should tell us that GD isn’t the place for you.

Well, you could go to that other board with much more liberal rules and lax moderation to read Dio’s posts, but you’ll have to confine yourself to one specific forum on that board, as he only lasted a few months there before he wore out his welcome and ended up “boxed for life”.

So, no, it’s not this MB that can’t handle certain posters. It’s certain posters who can’t handle Message Boards.

Ooh! That’s a great idea! Let’s box posters for life over here! Settled.

I don’t know what you people are on about. Der Trihs’s posts are both timeless classics.

I think you mean “are both timeless and classic” or “are timeless classics”.

Nope! I mean he’s really only just got two that he repeats over, over and over. But somehow they just never get old! My favorite is the one about religion. But, whoa, there’s also the one about Republicans and gosh how do you decide?

Heh.

I’m seeing a whole lot of posts where he posted about a group, not on-Board individuals (something explicitly allowed in the rules) and was Noted because those were off-topic or hijack-y, not because they were personal insults. Very different from Dio’s habit of direct personal insult.

The only exchange that’s really personal-insult territory, well quite frankly, Oakminster started it. And they were both modded for the exchange.

So yawn, call me when it’s not a Rightie or Christian starting the crusade to get DT banned.

Der Trihs is way better than Dio. But he is often boring, with his repeated “everyone who think differently than me is EVIL” schtick. I frequently agree(d) with both of them, but the hatred of people who don’t share their worldview is pretty childish. You know who I really miss? That Muslim person, Aldebarron, or whatever. He at least had a unique perspective.

Aldebaran. After the star, probably.

It’s not about personal insults. It’s about contributing substantively to threads in GD, rather than ranting. Again, it’s posting behavior that may be perfectly OK in other forums, but not in GD. And when asked to stop by the mods, the request is not simply to stop for an hour or a few days.

Mr Dribble, do I count? I’m an atheist, liberal and pro-abortion. To my recollection, I’ve had only one direct exchange with DT, over the motivation of pro-life folks, and although we disagreed it wasn’t acrimonious. Nothing personal. Still, while DT is careful to frame his insults in general terms, insult is his general mode of contribution to GD. Agreed, this doesn’t of itself violate the “no insult” rule, but it violates the more general “don’t be a jerk” rule. If one is against one of DT’s positions (which, in general, I am not), one is on the side of darkness and evil. THAT’S his point, and he has made it ad nauseum. IMHO, banning Der Trihs would be the single most valuable advance of the board in my eight years participating here. He’s an embarrassment to my side. I wish he were gone.

“Interesting” is one of the currencies of the realm. And them as has the “currency” gets to buy the air time.

ETA: And it would seem there is wisdom in waiting 5 minutes after seeing any new post before responding to it. :stuck_out_tongue: And this goes for the mods too, who have twice recently (that I noticed) modded a post, only to have that post modified out from under them while the mod note was being posted!

Are some of you seriously asking mods to ban a poster you don’t like? This isn’t an exclusive club, participation is voluntary, and most of us aren’t even paying to participate. Der Trihs and I disagree on just about everything but I don’t want to see him or anyone else who contributes booted for having unpopular views. So what if he has strong views on a couple of topics? There are members here with posts above 15,000 who contribute little content to an exhausting number of threads and who never shut up. At least the more passionate posters have focus and substance to their contributions.
