Curlcoat, what's the deal with you?

Trying to earn enough money to stay alive. I didn’t have a TV then.

Yeah, and when I try I am told I’m an idiot. Inspiring.

Where do you get the idea I am trying to gain sympathy in any way?

I have to admit it’s pretty amusing watching curlcoat digging herself deeper and deeper into that hole.

I was actually thinking more along the lines of people here. Or if Germany was doing anything.

The people living now in the US had nothing to do with the slavery and many of us didn’t even have ancestors in this country when it happened. However, what I was referring to was whether or not Germany has ever done anything, or if there were any special programs for the Jews that fled here during the war.

Affirmative action programs were govermental. I don’t know if the universities and employers still have quotas now but they did when I was younger.

Err…it often is.

But affirmative action programs aren’t for African-Americans specifically, or exclusively. They target underrepresented classes in general; e.g., often, Hispanics, women, and Native Americans benefit as well.

Yup.

What I don’t understand, curlcoat, is why you are still on this kick about slavery reparations. You seem to be under the impression, because at some point in your life you knew a couple black people who were adamant supporters of reparations, that this is some sort of big thing that most black people support, or anyone on this board. Nobody in the thread that originated this one ever mentioned slavery reparations or claimed to support the idea, yet you just went on and on and on about it.

Clearly you’ve never heard of the blues.

Or folk songs written by revolutionary groups, or protest songs against wars, poverty, or injustice.

How, if it is germaine to the discussion?

Unlike most here, I am not trying to “get” anyone. And, I don’t dislike black people, I just reserve judgement on them, the younger ones, until I see what they are like.

I don’t know how I feel about that. The median income in that report would be pretty close to poor here. I believe that is was somewhere around $30,000 and even if that is net, it is $2500 a month. My mortgage alone is almost $1800. Perhaps there are two people in the household and they are netting $60,000 - that would be better, but it still would be pretty tight if they had any children, and I rather doubt that the census figure was net.

See upthread on that one.

OK, then, singing old folk tunes from way back when is generally not complaining. I and my grandfather didn’t live those things, so we were not complaining about them.

Is that a recent thing? The companies I worked for never had troubles with not having enough women, Hispanics or Native Americans as employees but we were almost in continual trouble regarding the number of black employees we were behind on. And we had zero Native Americans (we called them Indians back then) despite having a large population of them. All we ever heard about WRT quotas was for the blacks. So my experience with affirmative action involved blacks only.

Actually, seems to me that affirmative action is being phased out, isn’t it?

Excellent.

Reading comprehension please. I said way back in the original thread that I didn’t understand why the blacks want to separate themselves from the rest of the US population by call themselves AA. The response was because they are identifying with their slave ancestors. I said something along the lines of why in the world would they want to do that, unless they were still bent on being compensated for it - and come to think of it, I have known many (not a couple, not even a few) blacks over the years that acted just like that. I don’t think they are looking for reparations for slavery specifically, but they do have this attitude that the world owes them for something.

Yes. I know many well educated idiots and some very wise people who never graduated college. You are an idiot no matter what your educational level. Your lack of education is no excuse so stop throwing it in our faces.

No. Affirmative Action has never been just for African-Americans, even though they get a disproportionate amount of scorn for it. It’s too ironic for words when this scorn comes from white women.

Calling oneself “African-American” is not akin to demanding reparations any more than calling oneself “black”, “Native American”, or “Latino” is. With this astounding leap you’ve taken to reach this conclusion, I’m thinking you should compete in the long jump at the next Olympics. Bring home the gold.

And when people tell you you’re wrong, you refuse to learn. You don’t have to take our word for it. www.google.com Go there. Type in the subject, and read. There’s nothing wrong with not knowing things, but how in the world does it make sense to say you don’t understand, then argue with people who try to explain?

I am disappointed that Curlcoat is a poster, and not some new pet product that you tried on your longhair cat, with amusing/terrifying results.

I’ve been on the sidelines for this argument, so, based on my outsider viewpoint, I would have to say that, most likely, they think you are stupid and crazy because you are (a) stupid and (b) crazy.

A curse upon you Oliver Cromwell, who raped our motherland,
And I hope you’re rotting down in hell
For the horrors that you sent to our misfortunate forefathers
Whom you robbed of their birthright.
To hell or Connaught! May you burn in hell tonight!

Yeah, that’s not much of a complaint, is it?

And what school are you currently attending, that you are so aware of how much black history they are teaching?

Good lord, is that what you got out of that thread? Sister, you are the last person in the world to scold someone else for a lack of reading comprehension. Hell, half of that post just doesn’t make sense. Blacks use “African American” because they want to separate themselves from the rest of American society? Seems like, if that were the goal, it would have been smarter not to use a term that has the word “American” in it. And you really can’t think of any reason why a black person would want to acknowledge his slave ancestors unless he was on the make? Really? No reason at all? There’s absolutely no reason a black person could possibly have any interest in his heritage or the history of his family unless he’s expecting some kind of payback?
