Current CA fires - We're burning it ALL down

Its on loan from the USAF.

For what it’s worth, the fire threatening the Reagan Museum/Library started a couple miles north of the GOP Debate Headquarters and got more press because of its proximity to the Gipper’s shrine than because hundreds of homes and mobile homes were threatened. The shared Ventura Sheriff’s substation & Thousand Oaks police Headquarters is also in the area; it was briefly closed to the public.

When I drove to work this morning, I was not the least bit surprised to see that the hills around the museum and road up to it were blackened but the site itself appeared unscathed. Then again, I didn’t even try to drive up the approach road; I was late for work and didn’t figure official-types would allow me to sight-see anyway. I expect the Powers That Be will spare no expense to save that hallowed ground.

The 23 freeway to the west and the road (Madera/Olsen) to the east of the Reagan memorial grounds were closed yesterday but opened late last night. The T.O. Police/Ventura Sheriff’s offices were also reopened this morning. Moderate winds have us all fearing the flames could flare up again at any moment, and the Wood Ranch subdivision is ready to evacuate (again) if that occurs.

Power to the eastern end of Simi (“Windy” in the local language) Valley has finally been restored as of 15:15 on 2019Oct31. Schools were closed throughout the area yesterday and today.

A news article I read yesterday mentioned in passing that California is on year-round Red Flag (Fire watch) conditions now. I suspect that, soon enough, that will be true even when it’s raining. :dubious:

Sorry for what seems like a double post.
Since my previous one, above, I’ve had the chance to leave work and see during my drive home the Maria fire which is east of Santa Paula and Filmore and west/southwest of the Easy fire that got the world worried about the Reagan monument – it kind of looks like it’s burning what the Thomas* fire failed to destroy two years ago.
My daily commute from work to home takes me down a winding road that runs from Sunset Hills into Simi Valley and it was spooky seeing the flaming fire line in the distance to the west. What creeped me out even more (on Halloween night) was the half-dozen cars parked along the side of the winding road (ignoring the No Parking signs that are not lit at night) with people out of their cars watching and filming and snapping pictures of the blaze in the distance.

  • I misnamed it the Apple fire in my earlier post.

Grestarian, my parents live in Camarillo, north of Santa Rosa and east of the 101. Between the Easy and Maria fires, it’s been a concerning few days. Glad you are ok.

One of my oldest friends endured several days of mandatory evacuation from the Kincade fire as well. Thankfully, no damage loss.

Fun times in California.

Howdy neighbor! (I exit Olson to meet up with my buddy for golf at Sunset Hills frequently.)

My sister lives in Thousand Oaks, pretty much due south of the Easy fire. Her go bag is in the car, and she’s set to run next door and roll her physically impaired next door neighbor to the car at a moment’s notice.

My wife and I are set to visit her on the 15th, so we’ve been checking in regularly. She’s warned us that she may cancel us even when we’re on our way from the airport. It’s amazing how chill she is about the whole thing, particularly since one of the previous fires burned her roof and she had to repair it earlier this year.

We had a mercifully short lived water use restriction in Vallejo as the water treatment plant was knocked out for a while related to the fire at the Carquinez bridge. Found out about it after it was over since cell phone service was terrible.

There’s a lot of re-thinking needed if we’re supposed to depend on mobile phones in situations like this. Getting online was all but impossible as cell sites were offline with no power and texts came through randomly.

Some friends got a notification to bug out immediately as a fire popped up about a half mile from their home. A couple hours later, they were back home.

I lost power on Saturday and didn’t get it back until Tuesday evening.
