A few years back I bought a brand new large 4WD Ute (or pickup truck) which was silver/grey colour.
So I got special plates for it. BTL5tR.

I bet the autism support plate design is fairly new. Last 5 years, 10 for sure. ETA: AI tells me it came out in Aug 2025, so not even a year ago.

Their personalization decision may predate that.

Which brings up an interesting question: How difficult is it in whichever state, to move a personalized plate from one background to a different background? I could imagine it’s trivial if the state bureaucracy thought of that idea, or a nearly impossible Catch-22 if they did not.

In Virginia, you have to renew your vehicle registration every 1 or 2 years (you can choose, 2 years gets you a small discount), at that time, you can order a new license plate with a different design and if it is a personalized plate, as long as all the letters still fit on the new design, then you can get it. What most people don’t seem to realize (at least from what I can tell), is that that the cost of registration is the same regardless of whether you opt to have a physical plate delivered or just the required stickers (with the month and year). So if your plate is all dirty and beat up, you can just choose to do get a new plate and it would not cost you more for registration.

Good info. Thanks.

As to this bit:

> [@icon](#):
>
> So if your plate is all dirty and beat up,

I suspect nowadays that many people think that’s a good thing. It might thwart license plate readers, but be an innocent explanation, not the result of hiding your plate behind a cover or something similar. For which you might get cited.

Here in FL they issue you a new metal plate (with a new number) every 10 years whether you want that or not. I haven’t gone 10 years with a personalized plate yet, so I don’t know what happens then. But I bet I get to keep my custom letters.

As to plate backgrounds, there is slow continuous turnover in what backgrounds are offered. So there has to be a way to deal with a customer who has background X that’s no longer on offer. There should be a way for them to have the customer specify what they want instead. We’ll see.

That is a good possibility, but I think it is just that they don’t realize that all they have to do is check a box. It is easier and faster to just have them send the stickers. Also, there is no obligation that you use the new physical plates your received. They are technically invalid if you don’t have the registration stickers on them, so if you think your plate is particular clever, you can display one of them in your house.

Anyway enough about talking about how you can get **THEPL8** you want and back to providing a **SAMPL** of the ones you see.

PS: I made a list on my phone just as you suggested, and am slowly posting them but have not posted most of them. I will eventually (I think).

**BTHGOOD** on a white Mach-e with a frame that read “Believe in good” (Yes, I saw it close enough that I could see that it said “good” and not “God”). My best guess is that plate means “Be the good.”

Wisconsin has had an issue, particularly for plates made in the late 2000s and early 2010s, with plates on which the paint (or sheeting, or whatever process they used) would literally peel off of the metal.

The state mandates that people with damaged plates like these replace them, but unless the plate is less than 5 years old when it becomes damaged, the owner has to pay an $8 fee for new plates.

Because of people being cheap, lazy, and/or liking the idea that it’s hard for the police to read their plates, one still sees a lot of those illegible plates on the road there.

A couple seen while out walking this evening:

A Ford Mustang with: **DCS PONY**. Only needs an apostrophe…

And a very used-looking Toyota Prius: **WE R VE**. I’m gonna guess they own a MUCH larger second vehicle that’s parked in their driveway. Or in RV storage…

**THNXUCD** on some crossover. “Thanks, UC Davis” is my guess. Thanks for their education? For accepting their kid? For granting them tenure?

**916 4X4** on an F150 presumably with four wheel drive. 916 is the area code for the greater Sacramento area.

New plates cost extra in NY State. So that must vary state by state.

Or I think DVM is Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, now that I think about it. So someone with the initials BAC is a veterinarian, maybe.

And I thought of another possibility for this one: Maybe it’s a portmanteau of “lesbian” and “Mini”: Maybe the driver is a proud lesbian and the car is her Lezbmini.

Anyway tonight I saw:

**4TANNA 🖤** on a Toyota FJ Cruiser. I guess the truck or just the plate was a gift for someone named Tanna. Unless there’s some place called Fort Anna that the driver really loves.

**GOOSBMP** on a Mercedes AMG C63. Probably self explanatory.

This cite suggests Minis are very popular, or at least very sterotypically popular, amongst the lesbian set:

Pretty good score here today-ish:

- **LAYM2** on a FL 5-character Miama Heat NBA booster plate on a … BMW M2 with some go-fast mods but mostly loud fart-can exhaust & pop-pop chip. The late 20-something dude with the hawt same-age GF may have thought his car is lame, but then me at his age would have thought it was pretty neat.

- **KENAR8** on a Montana B&W plate on a black pickup truck. “Ken are 8”, as in “my boy is an 8yo”? “My name is Ken Ar plus 8 more chars = Ar⎵⎵⎵⎵⎵⎵⎵⎵” as in Arbminster, Arbondigas, ???

- **LIV⎵LKY** on a FL standard plate on a Porsche Taycan. Evidently life has treated them fairly well, so they’ve had at least some good luck.

- **CHNOLYV** on a FL standard plate on a generic car. “CH and Olive”? Her name might well be Olive, and CH are plausible initials for him. I really wanted to make it into a recipe or the name of an e.g. Greek restaurant or something else typically w olives in it, but alas, I could not. Can you? Late add: perhaps their favorite pizza is cheese 'n olives? China live? Anyone?

- **GL⎵CAT** on a FL standard plate on a generic SUV. No clue.

- **FOXYOXY** on a FL standard plate on a generic older white sedan driven by generic older white dude in his late 70s. I admire old guys w a positive attitude. I just wonder what “OXY” means? A name, a comment about some flavor of religious orthodoxy? Something else? I have a vague notion that “Oxy” is a standard German or Jewish male diminutive nickname short for something.

- **JEA-P1** on a FL standard plate on a BMW sedan. If it’d have been a jeep I’d have gone for some sort of alternate spelling of “Jeep”. Here? I have zero idea.

- **KEEP1** on a FL 5-character fresh-water fishing booster plate on a generic inoffensive pickup. Perhaps they mean that a good environmentalist angler keeps but one & throws the rest back?

- **IKAHUNA** on a FL aquaculture booster plate on a Porsche SUV. The 30-ish man driving w matching spouse or GF alongside seemed a self-assured sort. The aquaculture plate is especially pretty, and I suspect most folks choose it for the artwork, not the actual official theme.

- **MUGHAL⎵1** on a FL standard plate on a Mercedes coupe driven by a 50-ish South Asian man. I don’t know enough about Indian culture to know whether that’s plausibly his name, his caste, his ethnicity, or a reference to him being wannabe royalty. But he seemed a guy whose life was going top few percent. So capitalist demi-royalty if not historical hereditary royalty.

**RIRIMOM** on a Tesla. Is “Riri” a slang term in some other culture? Or maybe that’s her kid’s nickname.

**49ERS SF** on a BMW sedan. Probably self explanatory if you know American football teams.

**DV8D2EV** on a Kia EV. They deviated to an EV.
