# Cutthroat Island might be better than POTC

See topic, aside from Geena Davis giving a poor performance it might be a better pirate movie.

I find it an adequate popcorn flick - light amusement, no deep inner meaning, some eye candy action going on. And poor Trotter …

That is pretty much all you should ask and expect from a pirate flick…and the reason POTC 2 and 3 are abysmal entertainment, both pompous and stupid at the same time!
Funny thing is in CI in the first action scene in Port Royale I could swear you see an extra in the crowd that looks like Jack Sparrow.:eek:

Cutthroat Island was mostly let down by its two leads. Without the miscast Geena Davis and the pallid Matthew Modine, it would have been pretty good.

I saw it in the theater and I can’t remember anything about the movie. Poor Geena. Didn’t _The Long Kiss Goodnight_ come out around the same time as her pirate movie?

Yeah, there was a period when her director husband Renny Harlin was determined to make her a female action star, a sort of proto-Angelina Jolie.

Wait… is this thread comparing CI with all of the POTC movies? Because I’d say that the first POTC is much, much better than CI. But POTC 2 and 3 are definitely worse.
IMO, The first POTC was brilliant. Good casting, good script, good humor, good special effects. I actually saw it twice in theater, and I generally don’t go to the movies very often and almost never see a movie more than once until it’s on DVD.

I hate to disparage a fellow Kyian, but Depp’s Richard’s impersonation as Sparrow is the worst thing about the films to me.

No contest. While there were certainly flaws in POTC (covered over by Johnny Depp’s bravura performance), **Cutthroat Island** is a mess, with, among other things, an entire ship of sailors left completely forgotten at the end.
