My mom still cuts my hair! She does a good job, and it beats shelling out $15 a haircut.
(We still live in the same town, which helps.)
One of my favorite family pics is of my mom, irritated look on face, cutting the hair of my kid brother (about age 5 at the time), while he’s bawling as though he was undergoing surgery without anesthesia.
My Mom cut my hair from birth til the time I was 13. She would tape my hair to my forehead and then trim the bangs! I looked like Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra growing up. It was bad but she said that was the only way she could get my bangs even. She did my older sister’s hair like that until she was like 5 and somehow my sister was able to get her to start at least giving her layers. I was still stuck with the taped bangs.
I cut my own hair now mostly because I can’t afford to let anyone else do it. Since I chopped off all the length it’s pretty easy, I just lean over and cut everything the same length. Turns out great everytime.
I cut my son’s hair, I use the clippers. I give him a home version of a flat top because he has about 4 swirls right up front and if it gets very long it looks really odd. He also has a huge swirl in the back so I have to fight that everytime. My daughter, well she was born with thin fuzzy hair and still hasn’t got enough to cut. I am tempted just once to give her the taped bangs cut just for my own personal enjoyment. I think I still have at least another year or two before I have to cut her hair though.
Now that is an idea. It sounds goofy at first reading, but my daughter positively looooooves tape, and all other things sticky. I’m sure she’d have no objection to me putting tape on her hair. I think I’ll try that next time!
When I was 6 or 7, home from school with some disease or other, I committed the sin of chewing gum in bed. I got what was coming to me when the gum fell out of my mouth and into one of my ponytails. I knew Mom would kill me if she knew I’d been chewing, so I took it upon myself to trim out the evidence. She figured it out when she took out the rubber bands that night. I still think she trimmed TOO MUCH off to make it even…
I used to let her cut my hair from time to time as I was growing up, despite her famous line “Well, it’ll grow…”
