DACA if Mexico pays for the wall.

You’d be better off building an ocean-to-ocean shipping canal along the border. At least that could be somewhat useful.

You are doing nothing to clarify your position or bolster your credibility. Make a point or move on.

But since your nationality automatically gives you better insights into the Mexican economy and auto manufacturing industry, would you care to tell me what percentage of cars exported to the US are built or assembled in maquiladora?

Perhaps you can tell me how much of your export economy is generated in maquiladora?

Perhaps you can tell me what percentage of your exports come to the USA?

If we tariff you, you will bitch and moan (and rightly so) but you will suck it up (at least a bit) because 15% of your economy is driven by your exports to the USA and 80% of your exports are to the United States. We are practically your only trading partner.

You said: “he may want to take that under consideration when vehicles built here for your car companies suddenly become 10% more expensive and they lose customers to automakers from Asia and Europe. Or will Ford or GM be able to absorb much of the 10% he feels Mexican businesses will absorb in order to compete?”

And I respond that Asia is already here making cars in America with American labor. If Ford’s plant in Mexico loses jobs that are sent to Hyundai’s plant in Alabama and Ford has to suck up some of that tariff, well why should it bother me that Hyundai’s plant in Alabama gets more jobs at the expense of Ford’s plant in Mexico (putting aside the inefficiencies of tariffs)? And yes Ford will in fact suck up some of the cost of that tariff.

As far as I am concerned, the Ford made in Mexico is an import and the Hyundai made in Alabama is a domestic car. I guess you can say the Ford made in Mexico is an American branded car but its not really made in America any more than Iphones are. The fact that they were designed in Cupertino or Detroit does not make them American made.

Because its really obnoxious to treat your friend and neighbor that way. America could throw its economic weight around and engage in capitalistic colonialism with all of Latin America and just keep suppressing all the rebel groups that pop up to throw off our yoke. But its a pretty obnoxious thing to do and we have quite enough blood on our hands.

You’re assuming that this administration gives a shit about what makes sense. They want to pump their fist and say “see I TOLD you I’d make them pay for it” I’m almost certain that even the Republicans don’t think an actual wall makes any sense.

They just want to do something ANYTHING. The wall is the assault weapons ban of immigration. It doesn’t actually address any of the concerns about illegal immigration but they want it anyways and it will probably come around to bite them in the ass and undermine their credibility on the issue.

Gee, who would have guessed that DACA and the wall would become connected issues?

Is this a serious question?

Literally everyone knew they would be connected.

[gary oldman scream]EVERYONE!!![/gos]

The wall is stupid, but if the Democrats really want to play politics with this, the Republicans should propose a simple bill that does two and only two things: Restore DACA per Obama’s EO and offers up some nominal amount of money for the wall. Then let the Democrats vote against it. Of course, the Republicans are probably incapable of being that smart-- they’ll want to attach some sort of anti-abortion measures to the bill or something like that.

On the surface, it would seem like the Dems should just take the DACA/wall deal and run with it. What’s objectionable is that it Democrats would knowingly be taking race bait and agreeing to make it part of political negotiations.

Remember when Trump went to Mexico to meet with Nieto, played nice with him, and then took a short flight to a rally in Phoenix and basically humiliated Mexico in front of tens of thousands of salivating supporters and in front of cameras? I think Democrats remember that moment well and fear getting set up - and they should.

Still, I would not make DACA the sticking point. Make it about healthcare and they can privately negotiate DACA as well. A shutdown over DACA alone would not play well in swing state country.

I think that might have been sarcasm.

How will they send aliens back south if there’s a wall in the way? Will there be doors with turnstiles in it?

I didn’t watch any of the “negotiating session” with the White House and congressional leaders, but I did listen to Sarah Sanders’ press conference afterwards.

I took away from that press conference that the White House is backing away from the wall, and instead insisting on “border security.” When pressed, the most Sanders would say is that “border security” means many things, including a wall, and I think there was a comment that maybe the wall comes a little later.

If Trump wanted the wall, Sanders would surely be saying “we want a wall dammit,” not “border security means a lot of things.”

Looks like Trump is caving. Which is good news.

It’s my understanding that Trump is already on record (as if "on record means anything to him) that it doesn’t have to be a physical wall. Or it can be a “fence” or involve electronics or drones of some sort. But if it’s drones, he gets to have a joystick on his desk, next to the big, red nuclear button!

It sounds like Trump is back on “we must have the wall!” At the Cabinet meeting today, he said things to the effect of, the wall has always been part of the deal, it’s important, it must be part of the deal…

Jesus, why he needed other people in the room to televise a negotiation is beyond me. You can just play clips of Trump arguing with himself.

“We wants the WALL. Yes we does! GOLLUM!”

Stupid, fat Dreamerses. Takes all the good jobses, they do!

Trump is willing to shoot the Republican party in the foot if they do not cooperate with him and fund that wall (that Mexico is supposed to pay for).

Can he shoot them in a few other places, too? It’d be to the long term benefit of your country.

Now that control of the Lower House has been wrested from the evil-doers, shouldn’t the D’s pass a clean Dreamers bill on the first day of the new session? If Senators try to kill the bill with amendments, invite them on TV to explain why they hate Dreamers.

Looks like the wall for DACA is on the table again.

Only if you believe that Donald is operating in good faith, this time.
