I’m guessing he thought he’d just give the kid a carnival-ride experience for a few seconds and thought he’d be able to open the door at any time. ---

It seems that the father here is just being goofy and ends up doing something seriously dangerous. That is, I don’t believe he expected the washing machine’s door to automatically lock. I wonder why it did. This doesn’t excuse his actions. It just makes them somewhat more comprehensible. I am very pleased that the child wasn’t permanently harmed (at least not physically). ---

The couple seemed to actually be doing their wash in the machine next to it, so it probably wasn’t them. And agreed, dad was just being a goof - he put the kid in, stood back, and immediately went to open the door (possibly because he saw the water). Hell, possibly they’ve played that ‘game’ a few times before. ---
