A monkey wrench like a crescent or like a pipe wrench? A crescent may if your gas cap is “nut-shaped” but, otherwise, not enough of a clenching grip mechanism. Pipe wrench would just fine. What might work too if you have them are channel locks. You can wrap a dry rag around the cap if you don’t wish it to scuff.

You watch, now Kal will get 'em off just fine with a crescent.

Mr. K has a bunch o’ dem channel locks. Not only will I use those, but I’ll put them away in the wrong drawer…just to teach him a lesson.

Tip the thing on it’s side, pour nearly-boiling water over it and twist as soon as possible. I’ve done it once or twice, after my (mechanic) father screwed it on too tight. I was a nerdy kid, so I used the methods at my disposal

I can’t find a link to one, but I use a Tupperware™ rubber husband to open lids of any kind. Actually, I have three of them. One is only for dirty stuff.

Yeah, jumping up and down on the lug wrench thingy doesn’t work very well. I was 98lbs at the time. Btw, a kindly trucker offered to change my tire for me in exchange for “favors.” Needless to say, I went home and signed up for AAA.

I’ve got a thousand ways to undo jars and stuff, 13 years of living with the Samsonite Gorilla will do that.

Did you know you can tighten those caps so tight they come loose again?

Yeah, most of the glass drink bottles around these parts are like that. If you turn them the “opening way”, they just go round and round. You have to turn them the “closing way” first to break the stupid seal.

I’ve been thinking of carrying a Victorinox but don’t know what would the border guards think about a chick with a switchblade if they ever decide to pat me down.
I had a flat in the highway last year. Of course, it had to happen when my cell’s battery was dead, so I had to use the emergency phone. This blew donkey balls, because some genius has decided that there’s no need to place emergency phones in rest areas so I had to go to the nearest one, almost 1km and it wasn’t what you’d call a cool day. After roasting somewhat, managing to have a conversation through a ton of static (it sounded like when someone in the movies is about to say that the radio is breaking up and just close it) and waiting for half an hour, the mechanic from the highway got there. I explained that I knew what to do (the tools were all beside the flat), he asked me a couple questions and said yes, I’d been doing things right. Then he tried to turn the lugs and cursed the mother of the engineer who designed the freaking machine they use to close the lugs in the damn factory, not to mention the unknown father of the operators at tire places.

He had a tool I didn’t and that wouldn’t have fit inside my Yaris anyway: a steel pole about 4m long, which he was able to use to take out 3 of the lugs on his own; for the 4th lug, it took both of us hanging from the end of the pole to get it turning.

Whenever I get new tires, I always request the lugs to be hand-tighted, then I test ‘em. Makes changing tires so much easier (the 2’ metal pipe I have to extend the wrench arm helps as well ).

Don’t do this for several reasons. First off the engine oil can and will leak out as the engine isn’t designed to sit on its side. You can wind up with your very own Exxon Valdez memorial in the middle of your lawn. Secondly and more importantly the gas cap is probably vented. This means that if you pour water over the cap it can get inside the tank. Putting water into the gas tank can cause the tank to rust. Rust flakes will clog the carburetor and cause the engine to not start one day. Also research has found that if you get enough water in the fuel tank, it will positively prevent internal combustion. Nobody is sure why…
