Straight black woman here. I don’t believe I could bootyquake if I tried to. And if I tried to, especially in a public venue where other people can see me, I should hope my loved ones would promptly lock me up in an insane asylum. It’s not a classy look to me. That said, when Prince jiggles his butt at the end of Purple Rain, the only correct response to that is “Bravo!” ---

I can do the belly dancing version, with my hips, but I cannot bootyquake. It’s not sexy, it’s more of a cross between WTF? and how the hell does she DO that? for me. My first knowing introduction to the ‘Bootyquake’ - great word - was when watching one of those real-life bits on the Teletubbies, where they had a load of (black British) kids at a dance class shaking their bums to a tune which was basically ‘shake your boom-boom, shake your boom-boom.’ That have me the ‘aha!’ moment because I’d seen women - mostly black, but a few white - dance like that at clubs but it had seemed something a bit unusual. It’s a bit unsubtle but it’s also skilled and can look good. It has its place. I probably see it as more sexual than people who’ve grown up with it as just a way of dancing. ---

This bounce thing is too fast and goes on too long. There’s a reason why we tend to put things in slowmo to make them sexy, and why no one else does the same move repeatedly for five minutes.
