In a previous thread [http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=567501&highlight=adhay](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=567501&highlight=adhay), I said that teaching (here to Dopers but anywhere, The Dope has no corner on pigness, need I remake my point) that our global collapse as a species, now afloat on unsustainable debt and 'cheap oil, is _inevitable and immanent_, is much like teaching pigs to dance.

Nonetheless, Pigs, stand up and grab some sky.
We are headed for a global depression the likes of which the world has never seen. When gas and food prices start rising indefinitely and tourist dollars disappear from [your neighborhood (YN)'s economy, AND THEY WILL, local sustainable agriculture and a well-developed local food distribution infrastructure will be an absolute necessity. That said, I’m giving the following as wide a distribution as I can. I suggest you do too.

The world as we know it will cease to exist in the next 5-20 years. Whether you doubt that or not, please watch this video, an 82 min documentary, A Crude Awakening.

If you are to have any understanding of what YN along with our neighbors X, Y and Z are going to be facing in the next decade or two, YOU MUST SEE THIS. Take the last dance with me.
I predict that after you see A Crude Awakening you will arrive at the following conclusions.
1. The entire global economy including our financial, manufacturing, agricultural and transport systems depend FOR THEIR VERY EXISTENCE on the continued availability of ‘cheap oil’. Imagine YN’s summer tourist season when gas is $10 at the pumps and local food prices have risen commensurately. Disaster.
2. The world is running out of ‘cheap oil’. Gas prices MUST rise, and indefinitely.
3. And here we are.
If you’ve watched the video, agree with my conclusions and realize that it is time we started moving communally toward a comfortable and sustainable transition into a post-oil economy, give A Crude Awakening as wide a distribution as you can. IT IS OUR WAKE UP CALL. I would to see it as THE featured DVD at our local library.

For those of us who can’t watch the video (I’m on dial up. It will take 5-20 years to view the thing) can you summarize? The claims made by Crude Awakening are obvious from context (peak oil will be within 20 years, massive global depression, etc). What proof does it offer for those claims?

Personally, I’d be willing to watch a silent documentary if it were done in the German Expressionist (Cabinet Of Caligari, Nosferatu) style and backed by organ music.

Could you please just summarize the proof Crude Awakening offers? I realize that some of the impact and artistry may be lost, but it’s a better tactic than just saying ‘Watch this video!’. If the proof you give me is convincing, I and other readers are much more likely to watch CA and to watch it in a favorable mood.

Forget it. He doesn’t want to debate. He just wants to spread propaganda. Dude, what part of, MY COMPUTER ISN’T WORKING RIGHT do you not understand? And no, I’m not downloading it. It is not up to ME to view your stupid video – it is up to YOU to present your case, not merely say, “here, watch this!”

Rather than give you a Warning, I will be kind enough to move this to the **BBQ Pit** which is where you evidently thought you were posting.
(Any thread that begins by asserting that some large number of its readers need to be compared to pigs belongs in the **Pit** , regardless what silly argument you come up with to rationalize putting it in Great Debates.)

It sounds like they made a movie of the book [Why Your World Is About To Get A Whole Lot Smaller by Jeff Rubin.](http://www.amazon.ca/Your-World-About-Whole-Smaller/dp/0307357511) Not a lot of propaganda; just a lot of good information about our cheap oil based global economy, how close we are to peak oil, and what happens after peak oil.
