> GHB, a popular date rape drug, is definitely vomit-inducing, whether taken purposefully or slipped into someone’s drink. This does pose questions as to why a guy would want to rape a girl covered in semi-digested food and alcohol,

Well, the vomit-inducing is usually **after** the victim wakes up; the date rapist is probably long gone when the vomiting starts.

> The girls I know who have had their drinks spiked (and there have been quite a few, which is really sad, including a bartender who was working when it happened) all said they only had one or two drinks and ended up feeling like they’d had ten- dizziness, blackouts, vomiting. They also all went to the hospital and had blood tests that confirmed the presence of rufies in their systems.

This FOAF info seems unlikely, just due to the physical properties of these drugs.

By the time the victim wakes up, their body has metabolized the drug so completely that a standard test wouldn’t detect them. (And it’s a urine test, by the way, not a blood test.) If they “all went to the hospital” on their own, instead of being carried in by friends while they were unconcious, it’s really unlikely that the tests could have “confirmed the presence”. Even if they had been given rufies, the drug is no longer present to be confirmed.

If the hospital did a blood test, they were checking the blood alcohol level (among other things). Too high a blood alcohol level can be fatal, and hospitals watch for that. And the BAL test will tell how many drinks they \*really \* had. Did any of these girls tell you what the hospital said their blood alcohol level was?

For most girls (and boys), saying that someone gave you rufies is preferable to admitting that they got so drunk that they passed out, and can’t remember what happened.

> I could tell you a bit about that one, though it doesn’t sound like what happened to your friend. It doesn’t generally make you sick. It just intensifies the feeling of drunkness by about 10-fold, and it blacks out everything, making it the perfect date-rape drug.

At least in Australia, I believe the Royhypnol formula was changed. IIRC, it was previously odourless and colourless, so it could be added to drinks without the victim suspecting. Manufacturerers either added a colour or unpleasant taste to aid detection, after reports it was being implicated in date rapes.

> IIRC, alcohol exacerbates shellfish poisoning because of the presence of a compound in the shellfish which is chemically similar to disulfiram (Antabuse). This happened to my wife and I recently. We ate some bad green mussels for lunch at a sushi bar. 2 hours later she was doing a great Linda Blair imitation all over the Wal-Mart parking lot. I, however, felt fine. Later that night, though, I fixed myself a vodka martini and settled in to watch some TV. I got less than half the martini down before I was driving the porcelain bus.

Thank you, **Washoe**. I believe you may have solved one of the greatest mysteries of my life. For New Years 2000, we went out to a fish place and had some clam chowder (on an empty stomach, too). Later that evening, having had quite a lot to drink (though not more than I ever had before, approx. 3 large drinks), I began to feel not at all well, but not in a traditional ‘sick to my stomach way’. It was much worse. I felt like couldn’t control my limbs.
Needless to say, I wound up vomiting for several hours in a stairwell and pretty much thinking I was going to die. then I was really ill for two days. Everyone has always said, ‘oh you just drank too much’ but that really never felt like a sufficient explanation for the horrors I suffered - I even independently thought of someone slipping Antabuse in my drink, it was that bad.
I haven’t been able to have more than two small drinks ever since without feeling gross. Yuck.

Cheers,
Daphne
