Daughter/car/flight crisis -- need advice quick

Yaay!! Let the happier part of the adventure begin.

That’s great news, in comparison to what you posted earlier.

Huh. I was traveling once through NM, and passed a moving van on fire. I felt very sorry for the people whose belongings were going up in smoke

If you think about it it’s best to transport your non-replaceable items yourself. My dad was an amateur photographer and his equipment and most of my family’s personal history was stolen in transport. I would gladly pay $10K for those pictures and that’s a lot of money to me.

You take a chance any way you do it, your own car could catch on fire, I think I recently heard of that happening to someone. But I agree with you because you will put more effort into keeping those items safe than someone for hire who has insurance and is not risking anything at all. Unfortunately insurance only covers the ordinary value of items, not the extraordinary value those things may have in your eyes.

If she has renter insurance, it may cover belongings lost during the move.

Indeed! We are deep into filing a claim as we speak. She had a fairly minimal amount of coverage because it was mostly purchased to cover her bike and laptop. While the amount we can claim won’t come close to the amount that was lost it’s certainly going to be a help! Plus she had a valuable-jewelry rider that will cover her one good pair of earrings and one gold necklace.

It’s still a lot of work to quantify all this. And we have to do it this week because she’s leaving for her summer job in NC this weekend if we can get her sufficiently equipped in time.

 Very true about the extraordinary or sentimental value of things. You can insure for replacement value but the value of some things can’t be quantified.

For anyone who is interested, here’s a couple of pictures of the action and the aftermath:

That really oughta’ buff right out.

Glad your daughter wasn’t physically hurt.

Wow, I’m glad it wasn’t parked in a garage. That was a intense fire.

Glad no one was hurt.

Wow, what scary photos! So glad your daughter wasn’t hurt and got out of the car in time, and that she was able to get onto a flight! How did it happen?

We don’t know. USAA says they will investigate as a matter of course, all losses caused by fire are investigated. So maybe we’ll get some answers but I don’t see how considering the condition of the car. Something under the hood caught fire and it was probably burning before she stopped the car, since it went up so fast afterwards.

We provided USAA with all the service records for the car since she got it in January. The most recent was an oil change in mid-April done by Grease Monkey. No one has been under the hood since then but maybe it’s possible something they did could have caused this–but a month later?

She almost stopped under that overpass you see in the first picture. Glad she didn’t because it seems like that maybe could have caused damage to the roadway above. I don’t know but still, a scenario better avoided.

Thank God! When I read your OP, it sounded like the beginning of a horror movie, but she is home and in one piece! That’s all that counts in the end! :heartbeat:

I’ve seen worse on Just Rolled In.

Salvage that gold necklace and we’ve got a project.
