Fiance I believe (at least that’s what I read).
According to Wiki, he was with Tai from 2002 to 2009, but I didn’t scan further to see if they were engaged or not. Supposedly though, he married someone else in 2011 and they were together until his death.
May he rest in peace. 
The newspaper/subway joke has already been mentioned, so I’ll share (as close as I can) another one of my favorites of his about the difference between living in the country and living in NYC. In the country you look out your window and see a squirrel gathering nuts, in NYC you look out window and see a man dressed like a squirrel, gathering nuts. 
It is amazing how well that method works. I seem though somehow reluctant to resort to it.
No story, but I saw him once at Columbus and once at the New York Deli. My mother saw him at Daly’s Dandelion. They’re all gone, and so now is he.
