They compelled me to read this whole thread just to see how many ways people would say, ‘David B. aint gonna go.’

Reading back through NA’s diatribe - and some of PHaedrus’, and so forth- one thing that seems to be consistent about the trolls is that they interpret posts from David B, TubaDiva, and the other moderators differently than from other members. Now we can go into the psychology of why their fear of authority leads them to so resent any criticism or disagreement from those posters, but what it boils down to is they are assuming that the moderators are speaking AS moderators, all the time. I know that DavidB makes a point of putting his moderator hat on when he is moderating and otherwise is posting as a member, but clearly, not everybody understands that. So let me ask, would it be possible to change the way your member status is presented on the left-side of the screen to indicate that you’re a member, except when you’re moderating? And would that help matters?

Felice, once upon a time I was a moderator who dared to criticize a post made by another moderator. I was careful to type, at the bottom of the post, “privately, not as moderator,” even as David has, since the LBMB debacle, done his cute trick with “moderator hat - on.” For that post, and for refusing to say that I would never again type anything critical of a moderator on the subject of racial prejudice (I had thought the post was racist), I was fired. It was explained at the time that (1) there’s no way to disable the word “moderator” underneath the name of the poster; (2) Ed does not want moderators criticizing what another moderator on the board (which makes one wonder about Nickrz’ recent post on another thread in the Pit calling David an asshole, but I digress); and (3) Ed does not want moderators (or anyone else, now), posting under a different name. It was further explained that moderators were “held to a higher standard” than mere members.
You must judge for yourself whether these various rules have been evenhandedly enforced, and whether you believe that standard has been kept.

Actually, Felice, David and I discussed this a while back, at lunch. IIRC, he told me UBB doesn’t allow this sort of thing.

Indeed. How about you let me worry about when I feel I’ve been insulted? I think I know Nickrz well enough to know a joke from him when I see it. I took my humor pills that day. If I was not offended and/or upset by it, there is no reason you should worry yourself over it. But thanks for your concern.

Well, **if** I were inclined to stir up trouble – and that’s just what a 331-post thread needs, by the way – I might be inclined to point out that the gravamen of Melin’s initial “misconduct” was _public_ bickering, as opposed to public _bickering_. It would then seem important not so much whether David felt insulted, but whether the reading public _viewed_ the line as insulting, and indicative of public fussin’ and feudin’ between moderators.
But since the last thing I want is trouble, I won’t make that observation.

If you were tryin’ to stir up trouble, I would suggest that anybody who thought Nickrz was seriously calling me an asshole, rather than joking around (especially given my response), is in need of a humor pill refill at their nearest pharmacy. But since you’re not, I won’t. 😉
