"Day of Silence" silliness countered by "Day of Truth" hatefulness

I have no pictures of any type in my work area. Sure, I admit that over time they eventually got little tid-bits of information. I just don’t volunteer that kind of information and when asked give short direct answers. I can talk about seeing a movie without going into who I went with.

Those fuckers. This is going to lead to escalating hostility from both sides toward each other- perhaps even physical violence.

It really pisses me off that, before I knew any better I would have participated in this if it was around. I’m very glad it wasn’t.

I no longer believe that the groups behind this sort of thing are acting out of misguided good intentions, but bigotry. I also have seen things that have convinced me that they are not being honest either- either they are very stupid or are deliberately misinforming people.

A month or two ago there was an anti-gay conference in this area that my parents went to. They brought back a bunch of brochures and stuff. I’ve been meaning to start a pit thread about it, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I’m guessing the participants are going to be armed with pamphlets like those. I can’t imagine how despair-inducing it would be to see students giving brocures to other students saying in explicit details about how I was a delusional, STD-addled pervert.

Well, like, hop to it and stuff.

The “day of truth” should have been held on April 1st. Much more appropriate.

Well, I’d first have to read all of it. There’s several pamphlets and pages of notes they gave out.
Maybe if I did it one brochure at a time. But later

Anyway, this thread isn’t about me so let’s not talk about that right now.

Let’s see…
He failed the “Jumping the Gun” test, the “Attention Whore” test, and the “My Mind’s Made Up” test. What is this person doing in the Pit?

Great to see you posting again, Lib.

Sorry. I disagree. Since **gobear has been a victim of bigotry and discrimination, I would expect him to be even more on guard against any tendency to generalize, stereotype, label and victimize others with bigotry. He is well aware that there are Christians here who support full rights for homosexuals and that the Episcopal Church has split from the Anglican Communion over the ordination of a practicing homosexual bishop.

I know of others who are are Christians, other than Episcopalians, who also support full homosexual rights. His other post in this thread demonstrate that he knows well how to qualify his statements. His own partner has told him that his comments are a little harsh, although I don’t think that was the exact word that he used.

Further, keep in mind that the religious right has many targets other than homosexuals. Persecution can take many forms. No one should assume that because someone is a Christian, we have been exempt from the hit list of some Christian fundamentalists.

gobear, I remain fully in your corner regarding your rights. On tonight’s news in Nashville I learned that the man who sponsored the “protection of marriage law” in one house of the legislature in Tennessee is being sued for divorce by his wife. She claims that he has had an on-going affair.

I say if they want to be jackasses, they should go right ahead and show everyone what worthless pieces of shit they are (haters, I mean). I encountered these types of individuals while participating in the Day of Silence at my (fairly liberal and tolerant) high school. Most of my classmates were supportive or just weren’t tossed by it one way or another (one teacher, gay as the day is long, was tickled pink), but a couple of holier-than-thou types read the card I was (appropriately) carrying around and said, in response to it, things like “You’re supporting transsexuals? But they’re fucked up in the head.” or “You’re gay, aren’t you? I knew you were gay all along.” or “Oh, you’re doing this with your gay friend, X, aren’t you? Isn’t she so gay? She’s such a lesbian. Don’t you think?”, knowing I couldn’t say anything back. It took a fair bit of self-containment to keep from busting some of them a new one.

The thing is, when people come out and make hurtful and slanderous charges on the Day of Silence, it only serves to ‘out’ them as spiteful bigots. Everybody realizes what an asshole that person is, and either (a) that person learns their lesson or (b) that person just deals with the fact that now they’re the outsider. The DOS is a great thing, too, for getting people to think about what happens when we silence those who would call for equality, love and justice.

That is also an excellent point. People who build themselves up by tearing other people down can make anyone a target.

Quoth 365gay.com:

That’s encouraging. While it might be attributed simply to the fact that it’s in its first year, I bet it was promoted pretty heavily with all those groups backing it.

I wonder if the DOS will be different next year, in light of the DOT. Like, will they play the other side’s game and distribute literature, or do some kind of counter-counter-demonstration the next day, or something like that.

Not to generalize about these Bible-quoting fundies but I’d bet a lot of these folks are gun-toting 2nd amendment-loving types.
But doesn’t the Bible tell us “Thou Shalt Not Kill” ?
So, unless you are just target shooting, if you hunt aren’t you acting against the word of God, committing an “unnatual” act, etc? It doesn’t say “oh but animals are an exception and you can kill all the ones you want”.
And don’t these folks proudly proclaim how they would use said gun for self-protection, home defense, etc? But The Bible says “Thou Shalt Not Kill”. Have they found a proviso that allows certain exceptions when it suits their needs to go against the word of God?

Before you folks start thinking I am anti-gun - I am not. I own guns myself. I don’t hunt but I don’t condemn those who do.

It’s religion (especially extremists like these) that I’m not so thrilled about.

I get so sad about this. But, you know, what tdn said sounds good.
It worked here. Decades ago a few highbrow, popular figures opened up about their homosexuality. Albert Mol, an actor, the first one to come out of the closet. Robert Long, a singer, singing about his loves, a TV presenter, presenting a popular quiz. Tjeenk Willink, a member of parliament then, a friend of the queen, and now chair of the council of state. Ien Dales, a member of parliament, mayor, then minister. Her lover, Schmidt, a mayor and later a minister, etc. etc.

These are [were - Albert Mol died recently] all very well liked - no…loved - people.
Couldn’t that help, in America?

On one level, I agree with you. Purely rational thought would likely lead to that sort of line drawing. But you and I have the luxury of rational thought, while people who are the target of homophobic bigotry do not. It is one thing to watch an assault in a movie and suggest how the victim might better have avoided his predicament, but it is quite another to have a gun barrel aimed at your face and a man with red eyes telling you he hates you.

I don’t think so, Gum, because it’s a different dynamic here. Here, it’s all about political power because it is through politics that government proscribes rights. Rock Hudson was beloved, but his outing made him the object of ridicule and jokes. Senator Barney Frank is gay, but he and his allies lack the political clout (and backbone) to do anything substantive. The right wing has succeeded in associating patriotism with traditional moral values, making attacks on gays a tactic for getting votes. That’s exactly why the Democrats wimp out in their campaigns. They cannot afford to associate themselves too closely with unpopular causes. Like I said, until gay rights becomes a politically expedient agenda, there will be no gay rights. They need a moral leader on par with Martin Luther King, Jr — someone who will put his life and property on the line to demand the rights that God has given but that government withholds.

gum, you’re living in a place that seems to acknowledge reality. North America is fantasyland, where people pretend that kids don’t have sex, that the prostitutes are the ones committing the crime, not the johns, and that marijuana is worse than cigarettes or alcohol.

Um, I’m just making a point here, not trying to start a debate on any of these issues. Please don’t hijack this thread discussing them, okay?

Read Zoe’s post

Are you offering Zoe’s post as an example of someone saying that “anti-gay hate is in no way supported by any Christian groups…”?

Because she doesn’t say anything close to that.

More that she’s dismissiing religious anti-gay hatre, that because there are soem Christians who are pro-gay rights, that it’s bigoted to mention that others oppose it. REad post 22 wherew I mentioned “some church leaders”, and yet STILL get accused of anti-Christian bigotry. Pointing out that there is a large well-funded, infleuntial wing of American Christians who are opposed to me and mine isn’t bigotry, it’s stating the bleeding obvious. I’d be more impressed if the supposedly tolerant Christians would stop being so concerned about one gay man disrespecting some of their co-religionists, and maybe get active opposing the bigots. You guys are too concerned that David is getting obstreperous and ignoring Goliath.
