In this old thread [Which 60’s comic asked “Why Not?”](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=193535) no satisfactory answer was forthcoming.

I was looking back at the old threads I had started and saw this one and was tempted to respond to the thread with the update. But I decided to avoid resurrecting the zombie and do as has been suggested by starting this thread and linking to the old one instead.
