Could the TV people keep that from happening? Did they make them sign some kind of contract to prevent that, hoping for “better TV” via more open conflict?
Why the fuck do I watch this shit? :smack: Oh, yeah. I dooooooon’t.

One of the crew mentioned they don’t even know where the survival suits are. I’m sure the Coast Guard will love that if they come on board for an inspection.
That’s exactly it (bolding mine).
On the Northwestern all greenhorns do the bite-off-the-herring-head ritual. There might have been a couple over the years who were too grossed out to do it at the outset, but IIRC they did do it at some other point.
Fraternity is the culture of businesses like crab fishing. Partaking of rituals cement you as part of the group; for greenhorns wanting to prove their mettle, it’s a requirement.
All greenhorns get hazed – again, part of the culture, part of their “apprenticeship” period. My guess is that, if Dane had taken part in the head shaving, the guys wouldn’t have behaved as they did.
I can’t believe how that “crybaby” crew gets anything done! Monty is a big baby, Freddie acts like the Capt’s son and as far as the Captain he couldn’t make it in the real world. Dane whipped Freddie and daddy came to his rescue!
How much of the time is the Bering Sea all that rough? Do they fish most of the time when it is calm? I also saw them catching a lot of snow crabs (greatly inferior to king crab)-how much do they lose by catching that trash?
To answer the crab question - they can catch different crabs during different times of year. King crab season is already done on the show, and they’re in opilio crab season now. So they’re fishing in opilio grounds, and legally, that’s all they’re allowed to keep. Catching and keeping out-of-season crab would be very, very, bad for a boat and captain.
I’m amazed that bloated walrus didn’t burst when the Wizard crew were pulling it out of the water. It was full of gas and it wouldn’t be pleasant if it spewed open. Freddie was right in the line of fire when he was on lying on top of the walrus.
I know they said that tusk was worth 5k but getting sprayed by what comes out of a bloated body would be a risk that I wouldn’t take. Those Wizard guys were lucky.
Freddie is out of control. The extreme cold didn’t appear to even faze him.
I swear he is superhuman. He can physically withstand so much stuff it isn’t funny…it’s actually mind-boggling!
Yeah and Keith didn’t even reprimand him , thought it was crazy, he could have lost the guy. Idiot.
He should have fired his ass.
Freddie seems to be way too popular with the crew (not to mention the audience) to be fired over that stunt. It would be horrible for the morale of the crew (and ratings). I have to agree with the previous posters who have made comments about him being super-human. He appears to have an incredible constitution and work ethic, which normally makes him a great example for the rest of the crew.
That said, he’s stumbled with his example this season. Jumping off the boat was clearly a mistake that can’t be defended. While I get his actions with the greenhorn, I think he handled the situation immaturely, other than not pounding on Dane after the sucker punch.

I don’t think Dane would even agree with that one.
From comments that have been made over the seasons of Deadliest Catch, it sounds like Freddie is already a legend up there. While stupid, I’m guessing that jumping into the Bering Sea for several minutes and being no worse for the wear is only going to add to that legend.
