Deaf or Blind?

I couldn’t deal with giving up reading, and I have already pondered this and attempted braille- I grew up in a little town near where Mary Ingalls-Wilder went to the school for the blind- I could never figure anything out from the little bumps…

Deaf hands down. I would not be able to do my job if I were blind.

I am hard of hearing BUT what I hear is “normal” for me. People mumble, overhead loudspeakers are often tinny and hard to understand, going to see/hear Danny Bhoy was a bit of a bust because he kept fading on me, I don’t “do” whispering too well - if it’s a secret let us amble to a place where there are no ears around …

A good friend of mine is blind from birth, and he says what he has is “normal” for him.
You don’t miss what you can’t recall ever having.

I’d rather be Deaf, which separates you from the hearing folk but not from the other Deaf.
As was mentioned above, Deaf hang together.

Now, with close captioning available, even TV and movies are no longer closed to those of us who don’t hear well.

Count me as one who’d rather be Deaf.

How about a REAL choice? Let’s say eyes versus penis …

Oh, I have no problem with not having a penis

I recommend a timeshare agreement.

Timeshares are an awful investment. The summers are already prebooked years in advance, you only get two weeks a year and you can’t sell it once you’re locked in.

I would suggest a sublease.

I will have to take this up with the landlord.

C’mon, you know you want it.

Well that’s a no brainer.

To those who are surprised that anyone would choose blindness: I too communicate mostly by email and other forms of internet communication. I too enjoy the sight of good looking human beings. I too would be in a hell of a predicament without my ability to drive, and would feel bad about missing out on books and movies because, well, I don’t process spoken information very well at all and prefer to have it written down in front of me.

However. This, this, and this are a few of the reasons I would not voluntarily give up my hearing. To think of never again hearing that low synth background, those crystalline rising notes, never again being taken back to simpler times, well life would be so much poorer I can’t even imagine. I also visualize music so presumably I’d still have that.

To each their own.
