From what little I remember reading of Dear Abby and Ann Landers in my youth, Abby was a nice old lady and Ann was a Nazi.
One young reader wrote into Ann Landers asking for some serious advice on contraception. She’d obviously made up her mind as to her sexuality, choice of partners, etc., and wanted to follow her desires responsibly.
Ann’s response was to attack her viciously for daring to even think about having sex outside of marriage. “You filthy teen-agers need to learn to keep your hands to yourselves” was the gist of her reply. I am exaggerating only slightly. I suppose she considers her response to be really hip and with-it because, in passing, she also reluctantly acknowledged that contraceptives do exist.
A few years later, Ann Landers said that it was perfectly okay to be homosexual. Good for her. But she’s never rescinded her position on extramarital sex. I guess it’s okay for homosexuals to have sex outside of marriage, but not heterosexuals. Feh.
