Dear Post Office,

Your problem is that you’re getting caught up on the “Mundane or pointless” part of the name. Like what was said above, a death announcement is neither mundane nor pointless bit it would still go in that forum because of the responses that are most likely to be generated.

Canada could nuke NY City and even that could go in MPSIMS dependent on what type of response the OP was looking for.

I would be so mad if they did that to me – I too live in a ski town (in Idaho) where the seasonal population is boom or bust, and they don’t deliver mail here either, but we at least do have a nice newish huge post office building.

Speaking of, I have to go pay for my box on Monday or they will lock it. Need I mention how big a ripoff I think it is to have to pay for a box when I have no choice if I want to get my mail?

While the title of the forum includes those words, it’s been clear for as long as I’ve been around here that the MPSIMS forum is much broader than that. Here, for example is the forum description:

When I move a thread out of the Pit, it does not represent my judgment about the individual poster or the subject matter of the thread–it represents my prediction about how the thread will develop. Sometimes, my predictions are way off.

The MPSIMS moderators are certainly entitled to move a thread back to the Pit if I screw up, and I’m always willing to reconsider a thread move or closure. As a rule, though, I try to avoid making the thread itself about where the thread belongs. If you want to continue this discussion with me, please PM or email me.

You where wrong. Big time. I am trying to help people in my county and you dismiss it.

Dude, I was kind of on board with your original rant, but you are really, really overreacting to this whole forum-move thing. Nobody is dismissing your rant. They just moved it to a more appropriate forum. I have posted about the births of all three of my children in MPSIMS, and I assure you that I did not find any of those events to be mundane or pointless. Get over it and move on.

Sucks about your USPS relocation, though. They’ve been making a lot of changes lately to try to fix their budgetary problems and some of the changes seem pretty boneheaded from my perspective.

Your doing pretty good at derailing your own thread, and being hung up that you don’t like the forum it’s in.

The post office did a dumb thing. I get it. It sucks. I get it. You could even maybe get it moved back if you get a heated discussion going about the post office. Discussions on what forum things go into will get moved to About This Message Board.

I guess I don’t really fucking care what forum this is in. Though I thought that it would be best in the PIT. Where I started it. I don’t usually use colorful language, but suspected that I might want to.

To have the thread moved to Mundane pisses me off. It’s not mundane. The USPS is fucking over thousands of people in my community. Does the SDMB think that fucking over a few thousand peoiple is mundane and not Pit worthy? Apparently so.

Thanks a lot.

No, that has been explained to you. Being moved to MPSIMS does not imply that your topic is mundane.

And you can swear outside the Pit, too.

Will you stop with this? Glance at the front page of MPSIMS. Right now, there is a thread where a Doper is sharing the news of his wife’s miscarriage, a thread about the passing of a Doper, and a thread about a Doper who suffered a severe head injury and is slowly recuperating, among many other threads that bear news of some significance or importance to the people posting to them and reading them. Do you really think that everyone here thinks that those things are mundane or pointless just because they are posted in the MPSIMS forum? If you don’t care what forum this is in, then maybe you could quit hijacking your own freaking thread with it.

Ironically, I think this is close to turning into a Pit thread because the OP is so upset that it isn’t a Pit thread. Good Lord.

Holy fucking shit dude, it doesn’t matter what the OP is about which determines what forum it belongs to. You may be angry, but no one, NO ONE is going to reply back about how the Post Office was right. You are (or were, before you started this hissy fit) were going to get people who agreed with you.

Let me say this again: no one was going to argue with you. Everyone was going to agree with you that the Post Office was you. Because what you were saying wasn’t contentious that is why it should go in MPSIMS.

Just because the title of the forum says it’s “Mundane” doesn’t mean it is only for mundane topics. It’s just the general forum. Look at the description: “For general discussion: from frivolous chatter to deep thoughts; from harmless diversions to life-changing announcements.

Whoa.

It’s gonna be in ATMB prettly soon if things keep going this way.

:stuck_out_tongue:

ETA: And is it really THOUSANDS of people that are going to be affected? 'Cos the story says 800.

Unless by THOUSANDS you’re referring to the thousands who will be affected by the increased congestion downtown.

And how does posting about it here constitute helping the people of your town?

Admittedly, it hasn’t always been this way. For quite a while, threads like this one were generally left in the Pit. But some time ago, The Powers That Be decided that the Pit should be reserved for rants that were likely to lead to harsh words among Dopers, and/or to generate extremely strong disagreement. That’s why so many political rants end up here, because they often degenerate into people calling one another assholes and idiots, etc.

At the same time, TPTB also said that rants about general life issues that were unlikely to lead to very much disagreement would probably be better off in MPSIMS. If you are complaining about something, and the most likely reaction from other Dopers is going to be, “Dude, that sucks. I completely agree that it’s bullshit,” then the rant probably belongs in MPSIMS. And that’s pretty much the category this thread falls into.

As others, including Gfactor, have noted, the fact that the forum has the words “mundane” and “pointless” in it does not necessarily mean that all topics are going to be mundane or pointless. In fact, there was some talk about changing the forum name to reflect the fact that it often contains topics that are far from mundane or pointless. But in the end, the name stayed the same.

See, you’re operating under a misapprehension here.

Colorful language is not prohibited in MPSIMS. You can rant all you like about the fucking post office and the stupid assholes who moved it. About the only thing you can do in the Pit that you can’t do here is aim personal insults at other Dopers.

Again, as others have pointed out, despite the rather unfortunate name of the forum, it clearly isn’t just for mundane issues. Look at the other topics in MPSIMS right now. One is about a Doper who committed suicide, started by another Doper who was his girlfriend. It doesn’t get much less mundane, or much more important, than that, and yet here it is in MPSIMS.

You really need to get over the labeling issue.

OK. I’m sorry and I was wrong to take it out on the SDMB.

I may have to talk about my original post being taken out of the PIT though. I think that it was taken out of the PIT because the MOD thought it to be silly and not worthy of a PIT thread. IMHO that is not something that a MOD should decide. I have PLENTY to say about the USPS that I can’t say out side of a pit thread.

If I started a tempest in a teapot, I apologize. But (there is always a but) I was serious about what we were discussing. The Post Office move in Breckenridge Colorado will not benefit anyone. It’s perhaps the stupidest move that I’ve ever seen. I’ve worked in Government for 17 years, so that says a bit.(and is a sad condition that I am trying to fix. One brick at a time.)

My Wife is an appraiser for the county. I run the GIS system. We can only sadly nod to each other at what a colossl fuck up the USPS asset team has done.

All they had to do is pick up a phone, and perhaps have lunch with the Mayor. This whole mess could have been avoided with one phone call.

I’m still sorta stunned.

I apologize if I pushed this anger on my friends on the dope.

Yours
enipla

Waaay back when I lived in an area that didn’t deliver mail to the houses, we had the option of general delivery if we didn’t want to/couldn’t afford to pay for a PO box. Is that still an option?

It might be, but I sure wouldn’t want to try it. And I doubt you could even get a Sears card with a general delivery address. It’s tough enough with a PO Box. “We need your address, your REAL address” that’s fine, I do have an address, you just can’t send mail to it. I don’t mind having a PO box, there is really no point in someone trying to get to my house to deliver mail. But, the PO should do just a little bit of research before picking a new locatioin. In this case, it’s clear that they did not.

I’ll have to ask if they still have general delivery, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable using it anyway. It’s not having to get a box that bothers me so much, though it’s irritating to have to go out to pick up the mail, but the paying for it. You’d think they wouldn’t make you pay if you don’t have a choice. I know the post office is hurting for money and all but it’s the principle of the thing, it really bugs me.

What’s a huge pain in the ass is getting stuff delivered when I order online. If I know how something will be shipped I can use the correct address, but sometimes it’s a crapshoot – fortunately, if something gets sent to the post office with my street address on it they hold it for me and leave a notice in my box. It happens a lot, I guess.

It is agravating to have to pay for the privlege of having to pick up your own mail when most people have it delivered to their house for free. I think that if you can prove that you live in the area, you can get your mailbox for free. I live in a different county, so that won’t work for me.

When I order things, I send it to my work address. But I have to make sure that they are not sending it USPS.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that “real address” part. It was lots of fun when people wouldn’t believe we didn’t HAVE a real address other than “plot 26 off of Marine Hwy”, which doesn’t indicate that plot 26 was over a mile from Marine Hwy… I finally gave up and started telling them that we lived on “26 Dirt Road”. That was over 20 years ago, things are much different these days.
